Faulty 1200 Ram Upgrade

Hi All

I have an Analogic 12000 8mb rma upgrade that doesn't work. When I install it I get a faulty board error through the expansion baord diagnostic screen it is being recognised by the 1200. What specifically triggers this screen - is it a power issue with the board?

I have checked the ram in my accelerator and it works so there must be a fault with the board.

I have done a bit of continuity testing and all seems ok (haven't done every trace as there are rather a lot) and the board itself looks nice and clean.

I have taken pictures of the board.

Any suggestions to get it working?

Thanks

Does another expansion card working in the A1200?

Clean the connector pins/fingers on the A1200, and on the expansion card.

Also, try the trick of seating the card all the way in, and then pulling it out by 1 or 2 mm.

Yes - I have av 030 accelerator working fine. Have already tried pulling the card out a bit. I bought it as faulty so don't think my 1200 is prob. As I said, card is very clean and looks quite new so don't think connector is the issue. Thanks for suggestion.

OK. Maybe try reflowing the through-hole pins. There is also an cap that probably needs looking at.

Yes - was wondering about the capacitor. How do I test it - only really a beginner on the electronics front and thought this card would be a good project. It was very cheap and not much to it!

Good. Next step: try with 3.1 or 3.1.4 instead.

Edit: or try with 1, 2 or 4 MB instead of 8 MB.

I only have other roms as files - will kicking them work (not 3.1.4) but 3.1 from Amigaforever?

No other smaller ram to try - have 16mb in my accelerator so if I need to try 4mb then would need to buy one.

I have a BC-1208MA RAM card (similar to yours).
With 8MB modules I get a red screen on boot.
With 4MB modules everything is fine.

Maybe this is the common pcmcia conflict with 8MB ram in 24-bit space... Do you have anything in the pcmcia slot?

I do - I have a CF reader. Can't remember if I had it in or not - don't think I did? I can definitely test this but would rather do a few things in one go as I don't want to keep pulling it in and out.

Also, I thought 3.0 didn't have the same issue as 3.1 when it came to 8mb ram?

I did buy it as faulty though...

yes and no - the issue is with pcmcia ram-expansions and >4MB in trapdoor simultaneously causing a hardware conflict. kick 3.1 tries to "fix" that by disabling pcmcia even if the card is not a ram-expansion.

So - found an 8mn SIMM in the cupboard the other day that I had forgotten I had, swapped it with the one that came in the ram expansion ang guess what - worked fine! So obvious...doh!

Have no confirmed that 3.0 works fine with 8mb and even managed to get Classic Workbench working by typing LOADWB when the startup script fails and a few cancels. Then you can mount CF0: and it works (not pretty but works).
