amiga hd as 1541..

Anyone tried the emul1541 that lets you use you´re ami hd as a diskdrive for your commie64? Think it is just what i want but is there anyone out there who has tried it? Was it worth the cablebuilding time?

Would just love to run those progs and games from a hd and don´t use the 1541 and unreliable floppydisks (better than tapes anyway..) any more...

As you might have read in some of my posts, I like the ORIGINAL feeling of all retro things So I used the cable (X1541) the other way around : I connected my 1541/1571 to the PC´s parallel port and wrote those disk images back on original floppys ..... but that also was worth the affort .... wiring the cable only takes up 15 minutes of your time and if you would like to use your Amiga´s HD, why not ..... I think it´s worth a try, really .... If I will find some time in near future, I will build myself an extended cable (XE) so I will be able to use my *modern* PC (600Mhz.) again with those cable and then I will surely try to use my PC as a C64 HD

hmm..

...i got an xe1541. Is it possible to connect it directly to the pc? I use it for copying diskimages and filecopying mainly (pc -> 1541 and vicevi..). What software do you use on the pc side?

Well retro can be cool, i would never dream of trying to emulate the amiga or even c64 as my main amiga or c64 system. But it would be cool to run jch editor and other programs from a hd. Soon i´m out of 5 1/4 floppies so it would be great using the floppies for games and the hd for progs.. for examples.

Hey Poppe! I thik I saw you at the lemon64 board, nice to see you around here...

You need 64HDD to use your XE1541 cable and your PC as if they were a C64 hd. You can dload it from www.64hdd.com

The Amiga method... I never heard of the program, but I do know you can use it to transfer image using the Amiga 1541 cable (you can find the schematics at Joe forsters site, http://sta.c64.org)

All programs will work except those taht use special trackloaders. The rest you can run from HD (like KCH, DMC or whatever you want. Good for storing your datafiles too!)

Hope that helps

Post yeah..

..i´m back again from a long time away doing more important things like studies and stuff.

Well i found the 64hd thing and still think i will go for the amiga solution. The docs for emul1541 just says that the serial interface will be locket while loading wish, i hope, means that i can use the computer for other tasks while the c64 is running.

If i should go for the pc thing, and yes it is tempting when i already got a xe cable, i will be forced to boot into dos and the computer will be useless for anything else than being the hd for the c64.

The emul1541 interface will even let me hook my amiga hd as a second drive so i can both use my 1541 and the hd at the same time, at least the docs says so....

Emul1541 can be found on aminet, misc/emu i think, i will post a review of it when i´m done building the interface.

Please post a full report afterwards, this sounds VERY interesting. We all know PCs are shite, Amigas rock I didnt know you could multitask and all!

Is it a serial port cable? That would be a bit slow perhaps. Anyway, if you dont have much Amiga power and memory, you wont be able to multitsk much. you'd need at least an A1200, i suppose.

Yeah, i´m thrilled to see how it works. There is another program on aminet wish will let you do almost the same thing, jnet i think it´s called.

Well, i guess it is serial couse the 1541 is serial. But the connection is to the amiga parallell port. Don´t know if it speeds up the loading proces much couse the emul1541 emulates the 1541 so i guess the speed will be almost the same. But it would be cool to try it out and get rid of the hassle finding 5 1/4" disks.....

Read somewhere ´bout a guy who built a amiga 1200 tower with a c64 inside. Everything connected to one external keyboard and one monitor... somehow... sounded cool.

I got an a1200 with a 030 blizzard board at the moment, so the multitasking will be ok. Looking around for a 040 board right now, maybe a 060 if i can afford it...

If it connects to the Amiga's parallel port, it's bound to be much faster and it could surely emulate a 1541 properly

Looking forward to your investigation
