Erm, what does the site have to do with protected tapes? Nonetheless I don't think that there was any physical protection on tapes.

Erm, because they are CRACK intros, you don't need to crack something that isn't protected

Of course there were copyprotected C64 games on tape. Nothing special about that. "Cracked from tape by xxx" was a common phrase in the intros back then.

Speccy games were cracked too
Some of them ask for particular word from the manual and this "tape" protection was some kind of "coded loaders," after copying they didnt work. |

The most c64 tapes used a custom recording format, with a special loader. You can transfer it to disk, but you still have to crack the game.

edit : Complex loaders with unusual speeds or encoding were the basis of the ZX Spectrum copy protection schemes, although other methods were used including asking for a particular word from the documentation included with the game (wiki) it was or very similaro for other systems |

Just to make that clear : Does that mean it couldn't be copied to another tape?
@Sensi Ah, thanks |

They were quite often heavily protected, I guess so that they could also sell the disk version (for a higher price). Many games used "off the shelf" systems just like Rob Northen Copylock on Amiga/ST (cyberload on c64, speedlock on ZX/Cpc). So of course they were released on disk by crackers, after transferring the files from tape and replacing the loaders (and adding crack intro/trainer ).

Yes it could be copied to another tape, more often than not. Some loaders used such high baudrates that cheap tapes/recorders wouldn't copy the signals accurately enough, but most of the time it was no problem to copy a tape (so I heard...)

On the BBC B all you needed was a tape to tape copier, sorted!

It doesnt have anything to do with tapes or recorders i think.
The copy protection (data) just precluded to load tha data to computer and back on tape (unchanged and working). Why Amiga games which dont ask you for a word from manual are cracked? |

The quality is poor then but some people used this way. But with already cracked games (and the results were horrible, a lot of loading errors).
edit - here is more http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZX_Spectrum_software |

Nothing you couldn't fix with tape if the game was crap anyway. On Spectrum I remember to copy a certain game to tape i needed to use a special software copy tool (now i don't remember the name). But nonetheless 98% of original game k7s were copied without any anything more special than two decks. |

Well to say the least, on CPC tapes, speedlocks have a weak point, making them easy to crack. I have done 98% of the Ocean Software CPC games tape versions, using speedlocks 0 to 7 and all of them can be done with no hassle.
But copying from tape to tape really not easy, because of the volume use when mastered, and also some noise, making them really hard to copy OK. |
