Why no "Match A1200" speed

Now, I'm pretty sure Toni has answered this before, but I cannot remember or find a response so I'll ask again.

I don't really enjoy my fans screaming their tits off when I'm playing AGA/CD32 games when I'm pretty sure my PC could emulate an AGA machine with less than 50% CPU time used.

I know I could turn the sound up, but that doesn't really agree with my neigbours.

Is it possible now, in the future or is it on the "Not interested - so will never happen" list?

the cpu idle slider has been provided to lower cpu usage

I find 020, nojit and cpu<->chipset slider set 2 notches from the left is around A1200 speed, but i guess it all depends on host setup.

In workbench usage it does, it's pretty 100% when playing a game.

I don't really play around with that but I did the other day and it didn't matter where the slider was it still used 100% CPU time.

Reason is very simple: 68020+ CPU emulation has no idea of cycle usage at all. It is made to be as fast as possible.

I have some improvement ideas but non-A500 stuff is always something I get bored too easily and my "rule" of 68020+ = speed, 68000 = accuracy is still valid.

Invest in a faster CPU with less heat?
Invest in passive cooling or even water cooling solution?
Use a real A1200

I use my laptop and its flawless A1200 emulation to be honest. theres more noise from the CDLoading tray than the fans on the laptop

This should be "fixed" in latest beta. (I never thought I'd bother with this but I did..)

Toni, that's an awesome addition.

I know you have priorities and standards for WinUAE that you have stressed many times in the past, but I'm so pleased you decided to add such a feature.

Basically new A500 cycle-exact chipset mode made this possible. I am even thinking about adding real CPU/chipset speed multiplier (or MHz value) for cycle-exact/non-fastest possible modes because it can be implemented, finally..

After few years of work all pieces are finally starting to fit perfectly

Even things I was never supposed to implement, like 68020 instruction cache, will be done soon.. 68020 timing will never be exactly correct (68020 is much more complex than 68000, in 68020 instruction decoding, data fetches and instruction execution can happen simultaneously) but basic A1200/CD32 compatibility will become much better.

(and just after I said something very different in that interview few months ago and in every related post here )

Yeah, I read that interview.

It's great to hear and see how it's all coming together. It's one of the reasons I can never give up on Windows - I just can't live without WinUAE. Brilliant work as always.
