14 year old son into Dubstep and drum n bass. Amiga scene demos that he would like?

Son said tonight his preferred music reminds him of Amiga mod music!
Any suggestions as to demos he might appreciate?

Thanks.

Everything from Suburban Base: http://ftp.amigascne.org/pub/amiga/G...Suburban_Base/

Especially the 13 disk music disk "Dance Diverse Vol. 2".

It's really oldskool stuff though. You might want to explain to your son how the Amiga's sound system is essentially a low memory 4 channel sampler.

For a bit more modern dnb I guess Haujobb demos with soundracks by Muffler. This one for example: http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=54617

(check Hoffman's netlable "Unstable Label" for more cool dnb/d-step music - http://www.unstablelabel.co.uk/)

And as suggested before you have to listen to Muffler's music which he did for many Amiga demos by Scoopex (e.g. Alien 2) and Haujobb (e.g. Prototype, Back 2 roots demo) . He's the god of drum 'n' bass music!

List of demos by Haujobb: http://www.pouet.net/groups.php?which=31
List of demos by Scoopex: http://www.pouet.net/groups.php?which=415

You might want to also point out that some of the seminal early 90s hardcore tracks (d&b ancestors) were actually made using an Amiga. He's obviously got an ear for these things ;-)

just for starters, but there are many, many other well-known tracks constructed using nothing more than an Amiga and OctaMED/Protracker that made it either onto white label or were published by labels of the day. There are others where some studio post-production was added, and others still where two (or more) Amigas were chained together to create 8 channels without the degrade in quality using just a single A500.

Perhaps I'm missing the point to what dubstep is but none of these sound like the dubstep I've heard

You can find all the Suburban Base stuff and more in mod and mp3 here http://modp3.mikendezign.com

In particular these tunes I highly recommend;

http://modp3.mikendezign.com/index.php?modid=212
http://modp3.mikendezign.com/index.php?modid=202
http://modp3.mikendezign.com/index.php?modid=191
http://modp3.mikendezign.com/index.php?modid=220

Also would be a good idea to download Soulseek and search names like 2BadMice, Altern8, SL2, Xl Recordings, Rhubarb & Custard, Moby (Go), Aphex Twin (Pacman), House Production Records, Nicky Black Market, Moving shadow records, Kickin records, R&S, Suburban Base, Urban Shakedown and Warp records to name a few.

Dubstep would have never seen the light of day if it wasn't for this type of music

This is possibly my favorite genre of music ever, Oldskool Hardcore/Drum and Bass from the 90's

I've got most of them on vinyl still. Lol Did 'formation records' producers also use amigas? I remember buying a sampler for my amiga to rip all the rave sounds... sadly my productions in protracker were all terrible.

The pacman aphex twin vinyl is worth a few quid now too.

Pages 15-20 of CU Amiga July 1992 issue (clickable in the link below) give you the basics for OctaMED, but the principle is the same for all trackers before and since. Plus, if you download the disk, you get OctaMED v3 and a demo song to play with.

http://amr.abime.net/issue_595_coverdisks

I personally stuck with v4 of OctaMED for a long time after v5 and Sound Studio were released as I never found them as responsive or stable as v4 for Amiga-only tracking (without MIDI, etc.) I came to OctaMED from an unusual route as I used Linel's SoundFX in preference to Sound/Noise/Pro Tracker due to its CIA timing (so you could loop a break perfectly - this was a unique feature for a while) but once MED could do this, I moved over.

As an experiment, I messed around with OctaMED for the first time in years just a few weeks ago, having saved a selection of samples via Adobe Audition/Cool Edit Pro in .iff format to my WinUAE shared work folder. MED loaded them without issue (I had 4mb settings) and they sounded amazingly crisp and clean. Was sorely tempted to embark upon a project but WinUAE's audio latency combined with my remembering I had a life these days prevented me from going much further ;-)

Prepare to lose days and weeks of your life if you start this "hobby"
