Flat Earth community mourns the passing of Mike Hughes

At least, his numerous rocket launches attempts did prove Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation cannot be challenged so easily. RIP Mr. Hugues, you could have given a new name to "rocket science" .

His representatives afterwards are claiming that it was just a publicity stunt, but for a long time before the event he was adamant about the Earth being flat, and about him going to prove it.

A disturbingly large (and seemingly growing) community online. Some are just trolls I'm sure, but I get the impression that a significant proportion of them genuinely believe the Earth is flat. In previous times, they'd just be the odd crazy that nobody took seriously and left alone in a dark corner of the bar by themselves, but these days the internet lets them find each other and gather together enough of a critical mass of people that can reinforce each other's beliefs, and even recruit susceptible and vulnerable people.

Sadly, stupidity seems to be contagious and spreads rapidly here in states...

Online cults, dangerous to the max. Once they pop, they don't stop.

Most of the flat-earthlers just do this stuff because it's swag to be against the mainstream.

I don't have a problem with cults and people believing anything they want, but when some of them start to work on placing this and other magic stuff in schools, that is where I am against anything like this.

Keep this shit away from kids...

I wonder... why he just didn't sellotaped camera to the balloon, and record the earth in all it's glory - investment of 200-300 euros.

Exactly my thoughts, thanks for avoiding me the trouble to recount the only feasible course of events.

I don't think the core Flat Earthers community invest that much time in social networks (or may be it has changed recently), the way I see it : Mostly gatherings of people with an attitude in few parts of the US, think Mormons and the like. The fact that some Millenials might be confused about such absurd superstition is preoccupying, but somehow unrelated IMHO (stems from the fact "Internet knowledge" has the edge over official statements for the young crowd). Also, that subgenre could be related to the larger Creationist contingent, to put it simply, people loathing the idea that our ancestors might have anything in common with gorillas... and yet .

Old Billy always had his own agenda, it's naive to say that this coincides with public's well-fare (skeptic I am) and up there old age doesn't change that

I agree with Pyromania, rich people always have that bias that money can buy anything, hence if he invests money he intends to reap the benefits in terms of increased notoriety nothing more. I don't believe he secretly plans to have chips inserted under the skin, or similar nonsense (although some kind of tracking involving IA maybe at stake, due to the nature of the infection).

I tend to have a little more faith in people that when they are asked difficult questions, they actually answer rather than try to direct attention somewhere else. Bill Gates consistently answers difficult questions - very well.
