yep it was Adventure by Willy Crowther . he was a caver [ spellunker in the usa i think] and wanted to make a virtual cave network for people to explore. he made it to run on the ARPAnet us military research network that was the forerunner of the internet. he chucked some treasure and a few dwarves in their for a bit of fun. then he went off on vacation. he came back a few weeks later to find very irate techies because so many people were trying to play it the network was crashing.
funny old world - no war, no research, no games |

I remember a text adventure called Hampstead, not sure if it was Amiga or speccy or C64. It's hard to place plain text into a timeline.

Text adventures were never a big part of my computer adolescence. I played some Swedish adventure on Spectravideo, then some "wait for next screen to draw" adventure on the C-64, none on Amiga and the last one was Larry on PC in school with EGA.
Never had the patience, I guess. Despite the fact that I type like the wind! |

Yeah, my German (though totally bad) is good enough to play some of these great games like "Die Kathedrale" or "Hexuma". I liked "Dungeon Quest" but usually when I'm in the mood for some interactive fiction, I play an Infocom or Megnetic Scrolls title. I usually prefer to use a Windows-interpreter though. |

I bet that Software 2000 could have sold quite a few copies of those with an English version. Just too much text for a fan translation though |

Indeed.
By the way, I think I remember "Ooze" being released in English. I haven't played it in ages but I think I remember it being actually quite good. |

This one isn't Amiga related but back in 1980 The Wonderful World of Eamon was released for the Apple II and it was converted to the PC about 10-15 years ago. It's a RPG / text adventure series with community created adventure modules. I downloaded the PC conversion a few days ago and it was kinda fun. There are over 200 modules for it and your character can continue through each adventure. Anyone played this before? I wanted to see what people thought of the series. Here is a link for the PC conversion called Eamon Deluxe. You will need to also use Dosbox to get it to work in modern operating systems since it is dos based.

Didnt really have the patience for text only adventures growing up as a kid, but I really loved the atmosphere of Corruption from Magnetic Scrolls http://hol.abime.net/3094

Nice! It reminds me of this vid of mine. A handful of years ago I made a trip to Yucatan and took a lot of pics (my camera wasn't video-enabled back then), so I made this little slide-show with shots from the Cozumel game and their theorical real-world counterparts. We exposed it at a text-adventures stand some friends and me were attending at a 2007 retro-gaming meeting held at Madrid. The idea was using it to ilustrate a series of articles following the whole Aventuras AD Yucatan Trilogy (Cozumel, Templos Sagrados, Chichen Itza) with pics from the real places to be released in our local text-adv e-zine, but real life interfered... I got lazy... so the only thing actually made was the Cozumel video! [ Show youtube player ] -- Last edited by rockersuke; 23 September 2011 at 21:51. |

I liked the ones by Magnetic Scrolls and Infocom, Leather Goddesses of Phobos and A Mind Forever Voyaging in particular. I remember playing The Pawn and Guild of Thieves a lot as a kid, and I was very impressed and always thought of them as the most professional games I had ever seen. I didn't understand much of them though and never got very far, I think the pictures and the speech synthesizer was what kept me playing

Didn't play that much text adventures on my Amigas, I remember Les passagers du vent and Le manoir de Mortevielle, 2 french adventures. but i guess they can't even be considerated as real text adventures because they have "modern" ways to interact.
Befor the Amiga i played many text adventures on my C64. I remember Hulk (took me a while to find out the "bit lip" command haha!), Aztec tomb, .. And also played a fiew with a friend on his cpc664: Orphee, la chose de Grotenbourg, ... (all in french). Last edited by Lord Riton; 28 October 2012 at 17:10. |
