from my quick peek, there are three candidates:

newicons (work:software/newicons) -> rename that folder to newicons_bak
classact (s:executeall/) -> move that script to s: or to a different folder (e.g. a folder named "backups" anywhere)
picture.datatype (in sys:classes/datatypes/) if this is v43 and an older version is in same dir then rename or move the current file and rename old version(v40) to picture.datatype.

to check version , run newshell, type "version picture.datatype"

i did not check every datatype but upto now, most stuff works on plain 68k

Sorry I'm a little confused by these. I do not have a folder called work:software/newicons or s:executeall

Where are you thinking I should see those folders? DH0: or DH1:? I have no such folders in either though...

No. Software that is not installed cannot cause trouble

But i'm getting confused now. Could describe your setup in detail?

Your AF differs from mine. That's irritating.

I have no such option. It would require a working Amiga OS that runs a terminal/network software to have read/write access to amiga filesystem disc, or am i missing something?
It means, AExplorer or something similar must be running to establish connection with a pc.
Do you have a pre-configured boot-disc?

My AF has subfolders containing AExplrorer, ROM files, ADFs, System (AOS 3.1) and Work (which contain the tools newicons , dopus5.5 etc), tools like transdisk/-rom, UAE in 4 flavors, docs, menubox.exe etc., etc.
Installation is a batch file here. That script simply copies 4 AExplorer files (exe, readme + 2 .info).

if your setup is missing all these files, it seems you just installed plain AOS 3.1?

My user-startup contains mostly assignments for tools on work. s/executeall is a sub-dir with 3 additional batch files. they integrate ClassAct, DOpus and Amispool (use printer connected to pc).

BigFan, thanks for all your input but it looks like we have the answer. I can't even begin to think how that happened.

I'm going to restore from a backup, albeit losing a few days work. That'll teach me to not scan unknown installers.

I'd like to smack that guy who wrote the ebola virus. Here I am setting up an Amiga 500 with a hard drive in the year 2013, and it starts acting funny (lots of GURU 80000003's...
Same as me. Probably not worth anyone's time wasting more energy on this. I'll scan with VirusX later and hope for the best, if not I'll restore old backup.

Thanks for your good intentions. Please place VirusX in your Startup drawers
