Is there a program for amiga that can pack files on hd to .zip ? I only have unzip program. What else packing programs are there? I know about lha and dms but they kind of suck.

Yes, you should be able to get "Zip" from Aminet. (EDIT: here, in fact.)

Also you could try LZX if you haven't already.

lha is better than zip. So if lha sucks then you are gonna be real unhappy with zip.

Amiga version of ZIP sucks. It does not archive subdirectories and files in them.

Compression algorithms are better in LHA.

Hi Picard, yes there is:

http://aminet.net/package/util/arc/Zip

The usage format is:

Zip -r (archive location/name) (files to be archived location/name)

It works fine and it DOES recurse/archive subdirectories if you use that -r switch. It's case sensitive - don't use -R

Yes I was wrong in that. I stand corrected. But I did some tests which is better:

Test performed on 5 files:

Code:
1. 09.DAT 51462 - data file
2. AEROSMITH.iff 301594 - picture file
3. DBM.WcManager2 378368 - music module in DBM format
4. ffmpegPPC 1126616 - executable
5. XM.WeirdOfAchron 2171958 - music module in FastTracker format

    Size of archive/percentage of compression
File LhA ZIP Ratio LhA against ZIP (the smaller, the better)
1 12939/74,9% 12441/76% 1,040
2 270181/10,4% 269622/11% 1,002
3 243517/35,6% 242626/36% 1,003
4 541259/51,9% 517732/54% 1,045
5 873508/59,7% 865851/60% 1,008
Overall 1941400/48,1% 1908184/47% 1,017
Though on my machine LhA performed all the tests much faster.

Interesting tests. I'm not surprised lha is faster as it was developed for the Amiga.

I must admit, I tend to always use ZIP for convenience now. Some of the recent lha releases on Aminet have also been a little unreliable, as KG found out when he used to do his WHDLoad packs in lha.

No wonder he switched to ZIP.

Well, I stick to LhA 2.1 and don't care about any recent versions. They are not flawless and I don't have time for experiments. Although ZIP is more efficient, on Amiga I still use LhA. Nevertheless I clearly see that better compression algorythms are in ZIP especially when it comes to comparison of the archives I send through the e-mail. It is my main archiver on PC and it is stronger than LhA.

Using zip for its compression level isn't a good choice imho. Just try lzx with -9 option.

Zip isn't more efficient.

Why are you hiding your compression options?

It isn't a "test" when you don't show the options you used!

This time it's packer war?

Zip it's more comfortable if you use WinUAE AND a real machine. Who cares about compression rates, there is enough space on Amiga (PC) hdd's these days.

Google does not know the file WeirdOfAchron.

Please place the 5 test files in the zone so I can do proper tests on them.

Take any files of yours and you will get the same results (of course I tested only default options and Amiga version of these archivers). Tomorrow I will upload the files.
