Captain Planet and the A500+ Cartoon Classics!

Hi EAB,

I've rejoined the site (again) whilst the UK implodes and have had an opportunity to image some of my Amiga disks using the amazing Kryoflux hardware.

My first Amiga was the A500+ Cartoons Classic pack which still happily powers up after all these years. One of the very first games I played was Captain Planet, and the music was unforgettably awesome!

The following year I added an Action Replay III and was the envy of my friends being able to cheat and rip graphics and music. In fact -- had it not been for the Action Replay, I would not be the professional software developer or geek I am today as I learned so much from the hacking I did with it.

Of course, I wanted to rip the Captain Planet music to play casually in the likes of ProTracker, but it wasn't in that format. Exotic Ripper could save it as the detected MMDC files, and I could play them in Eagle Player, but I wanted more. I wanted to see it in a tracker!

I Kroflux-imaged one of my 1990s programming disks and one of the unnamed projects on there contained incomplete code of what seemed attempts to parse the Captain Planet music files. Nostalgia kicked in. It's been 20 years...

From the salvaged code I was able to ressurect a goal over 20 years in the making.

With the wealth of the Web these days, I learned that the replayers of the MMDC format was code-rip and emulation. It also suggested that MMDC was in fact a form of a compressed [Octa]MED format.

Using the incomplete code I'd written over 20 years ago, I've now created a MMDC > MMD0 converter which has successfully converted all the known MMDC modules from Captain Planet and Knightmare to their original [Octa]MED formats.

The converter and sourcecode have been added as freeware to Aminet and I'm more than happy to share these in The Zone. If permits I will also add the "unpacked" modules from Captain Planet and Knightmare.

Welcome.

If its an A500+, be worth checking clock battery, as they leak and damage board.
