Okies, here's a few pics
The colden cable needs to change and connect the two pins as shown by the brown line. This is the A1200 mobo. You need to open the FDD by unplugging any cables. Look at this crap. Too far in. Need to figure how I am going to connect that little bastard in there. [b]If you cut this cable, forget this FDD.[b] You need to cut the conductive strip at R53. You use a wee wire to connect it to R52. You then wire a cable from R53 to pin 2 of the 34 pin FDD connector. So I still need some help with that. First, the mobo modification is fairly easy. It is the disk drive modofication that is a pain in the ar$e! For a start, I find it difficult to unlug those ribbon cables. I mean, there is so little space between the PCB and the mechanism that, although they may be unplugged, I am not sure how to put them back in. It also looks to me that there are three ribbon cables that need to be unlugged excluding of course the one that doesn't need to be broken. Also, when the article says that you need to cut the conductive strip, does it mean that I need to cut the white bit between the iron on the PCB (pic no 5)? I could do with some help here. I people can help me, I can send the FDD to them to do the modification or if you know an easy and cheap way to find a mitsui or chinon FDD, that would be even better. Fiath, how can I contact ville9? PM me his details because I would love some advise... Thanks again... |

Yes you can use them. I wish I could open the FDD as well and take decent photos as well. I can also provide you the originals without the arrows, but I can do this tomorrow. Feel free to use them if you want. I took them just to help people.
Thanks for the ville9 info... |

First of all, please don't use A1200FDfix.lha from Aminet anymore. It's a straightforward hack I did 8 years ago, and while it works, it isn't a very elegant solution...
Very nice pictures btw! Your first photo shows the correct modification needed on the motherboard. You can already use "real" Amiga disk drives after having changed the copper wire. But now for the Panasonic disk drive: The stepper motor cable as shown on pic #2 can be unplugged quite easily. For being able to reach the two head cables, you have to remove the cover of your drive (it's hold by 2 screws iirc). Now you can also unplug the head cables without much hassle... Please don't cut or remove the white ribbon cable as shown on pic #4! You'll need a new drive if you do so. Just carefully lift the PCB, so you can reach R52/53 and the 34 pin connector CN1. Now for the fun part: There's a conductive strip at position R53 (marked white between the two solder points) that has to be cut using a sharp knife (you should check the successful removal with a continuity tester afterwards). Then use a small wire and solder it at position R52. Solder another wire from R53 to pin 2 of the 34 pin connector and reassemble your disk drive. That's it! You'll have a 100% compatible A1200 now! |

Can I add to this:
Just got a Towered A1200 (Amiga Tech) which has a PCB and then connects to a Sony MPF920E drive. Now, I know Eyetech sell an EZDF0 interface for using Sony drives but the PCB is marked AmigaTech. Am I gonna have trouble loading games? I kinda like using a PC FDD as if it goes wrong (and I burned one in my A3000) its only £5 to replace. So I bought two, one for use and one for spare. |

The PCB marked AmigaTech generates the missing _RDY signal by delaying the _MTR0 signal for 0.5s. This works with the Panasonic drive and also with some Sony drives. Most track loading games should work with this, although the PCB solution isn't very accurate... |

Come on, man..
http://www.caps-project.org/a1200mod.html has an ascii art drawing that matches 1:1 with your picture. The jumper is to the left of the chip in the lower edge of the picture, you make sure that the two rightmost pins aren't connected together and then solder the wire from the rightmost pad to pin2 on the data connector of the floppy drive (provides the DC signal).. Also connect the two leftmost pads together to get RDY on pin 34. |

LOL, i love that solding s*it too ...
i remeber those heady days of 1993 of soldering a reset button to the A12 board.... and the mouse FLY-OVER .... i did get it to fit in that case GOD DAMN IT!!!!!!! it cost me 50p too (bargin bin for the connector) got two of them so its kinda good... and then theres the LED pin bank for the PC chasis to Mobo... and then theres..... and on... and on.... Good luck BarrySWE, one of the bits i love most, was that my amiga was MY amiga and yeah the mobo was a guide line, the rest was me and my soldeng iron(s)!! |
