Brilliance black square in >15kHz modes

I'm running Brilliance 2 (from the EAB file server) on an A1200 with a 15-31kHz monitor. It works fine in 15kHz modes, including PAL: High Res Interlaced, but in any other mode I've tried - DblPAL, DblNTSC, Multiscan - there's a black box over the control panel (see attached image).

I tried promoting with NewMode and see that it creates three screens on startup. Starting from a DblPAL: High Res No Flicker workbench:
  1. 640x512x1 DblPAL: High Res No Flicker
  2. 640x512x8 DblPAL: High Res No Flicker
  3. 320x200x6 DblPAL: Low Res
The last one is the control panel and the one with the black box over it. I've tried promoting it to a few different modes but the box is always there. Any ideas how I might work around that?
