Games for 6-year olds

Hello,

I'm about to spend a week at a remote summer cottage with my family. The weather forecast looks just like what has been the weather for a week now: occasional heavy showers of rain, so I need to have a plan B to make it through the week without me or the wife going insane (no, we're not going to the place in which The Shining takes place).

So, do you have any recommendation for Amiga (or any other emulator-assisted platform) games to load up in my laptop (from 2009 so it should run most things quite nice)? The kids (2 girls) don't know how to read yet and if they did, they would not understand any other language than Finnish

I will have to assist them anyway, but I'd really appreciate if you could show me the aces up your sleeves.

Currently they've been playing something like Super Mario Kart and Super Mario 64, they are also interested in games in which you can take care of animals and buy stuff etc. Basically the interesting games are the ones in which you can do a lot and not get bored easily. It was probably the same with me when I was 6 years old, but I'm still not going to put Football Manager on the laptop for them to play

A winner is SuperFrog and it will keep the kids busy for a long time. Trust me, my 4,5 years old daughter loves it! Another series of games intended for kids is Mickey Mouse related and you could also try many platform games that are catchy, fun and easy to learn how to play with, as well as educational many times.

Most of the top 8/16 bit brands will be fine, like Mario, Sonic or Tetris. Harvest moon might be a good idea and with a little instruction, Lemmings could be funny,too. As someone else already mentioned Superfrog, i'll go for James Pond 2: Codename Robocod.

When my GF was younger she used to play the Hugo games, and 2 of these are available in Finnish at www.whdownload.com

Can't get exact URL to these games because I'm using surf-anon here at work to bypass the websense

Thanks for all the tips, I'll try to gather at least those for the trip.

Does anyone know any other good, Harvest Moon-like games? I was thinking about getting Settlers/Serf City (without enemies so it's like a sandbox mode), or even Sim City or Theme Park.

Some old arcade games like Pacman, Burgertime, Frogger, Amidar, Donkey Kong and Qbert are suitable, as well. I guess, there were some My little pony, Hello Kitty, Barbie games for the old 8/16 bit nintendo consoles, but I don't know exactly.

I think I'll need to grab a few GameBase packages as well and dig through the archives, the Amiga and N64 ones should have plenty of fun stuff in case the rain really keeps the kids indoors.

Has anyone played Theme Park on the Amiga? If so, which version is recommended?

I was thinking more on the lines of me playing the game with the kids, asking them what to build and where. Basically the same with Sim City and Settlers, part of the fun is just to watch the little people do their thing.

To be honest: DOS, not Amiga.

Looks better (than the A500 version anyway), less loading time. But the Dos version is more buggy and crash-happy in my experience.

On a non-AGA miggy you need a specific setup too; ECS chipset if I remember correctly. On my older OCS one the backgrounds were seriously corrupted.

I have a 6 year old nephew and I can play some amiga games with him:

Lemmings: Works quite well, can even finish some levels on his own
Sensible Soccer: Easy enough for some 2 player fun
Lotus Turbo Challenge: Works also 2 player and is very easy

6 year olds can play just about anything action-oriented. They'll probably trounce you, actually.

Amiga, Nintendo and Sega games are perfect in that respect as most of them are action-oriented, not violence-oriented as it is today. No blood, all about explosions. Perfect for your younger crowd.

At least my child and teenage mind was very much satisfied with it all
