Question AGA/CD32 games vs OCS

AGA and CD32 games are really "enhanced" compared to OCS ?

I mean, except for the more colours of AGA chipset and the Audio tracks of CD,
there are games which are really different (more levels/music, better graphic/sound) from OCS version ?

in most cases i prefer the AGA versions myself. Some games like Zool feature more levels and that's always worth having imho, and prettier colours/graphics are a nice touch.

however, one obvious exception being my preference for the ECS version of Speedball 2... the CD32 version looks horrible.

There's no universal rule. Take on a game-by-game basis and with personal opinion

Yes, same with Chaos Engine AGA version, too much colors. Super Street Fighter 2 New Challengers have bigger fighters in AGA version.

Not to forget that some ECS versions have better trainers (or trainers at all) than the AGA version

i have a mad theory,so correct me if im wrong.Sometimes i think reason that some cd32 ports weren't better than their floppy counterparts due to memory constraints.Oh and why did the cd32 version of wing commander didn't have speech?

For what i noticed a lot of CD32 ports are only data put on CD instead of a floppy

Sometimes with audio tracks added, sometimes even without them

I only know few games really enhanced:
Darkseed and Beneath A Steel Sky have speech added and Zool have more levels

AGA versions instead only have more colours, it seems to me

there are 2 different points of view: technical' and design'.
on the former i cannot say; on the latter i would say that the number of colours is almost unrelevant to the game experience, and that more colours could be useful if really needed and well planned.

so for instance, Eye of the Beholder ECS is (i think) way cooler than its AGA (VGA) counterpart. same goes for Zool like games where colours were poured in, just because they were available (and not secondarily for advertising reasons)

Team 17 were quite possibly the worst culprits for sticking ECS titles on CD with no enhancements whatsoever (Alien Breed SE, Quak, Project X). To be fair, though, they also published some of the best CD32 titles too.

But wasn't EOB originally 256 colours (PC version) which was "downgraded" (for want of a better word) to ECS for the Amiga version? I doubt very much that EOB was originally created in 32 colours and then upgraded to 256 colours?

Steve.

Yes, EOB was created for the PC with VGA colours in mind : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_of_...er_(video_game)
So the ECS version is indeed a 'downgrade', but since it uses 16 of 4096 colours that might explain why marco likes it more than the 256 of 256 version

Steve.
you are right, but the point is that with a 16 colours palette, they made a visually more appealing (to me) game that with 256: the modest resolution and therefore the need to keep things simple in many cases fewer colours were a safeguard against colour abuse!

Chaos engine original colors = AGA version /snes version/ megadrive version
the ECS version is a downgrade version of the original with less colors...not bad but the game was degraded

The CD32 version is the best choice cause it have original colors and cdda tracks

Huh? No, the ECS version is the orginal and the AGA/SNES/MD versions were made later on. I tend to agree with s2325 on the bad choice of colours for the 'remake'

they were launched at the same time...so I consider the AGA version the original
CD32 version was launched later enhanced with cdda tracks

The ECS version is the original no doubt. We have to ask one of the Bitmap Brothers to be 100% sure, but taking a look at CE2 (which was designed for AGA) might give a hint

Yes, Laser probably confounds it with Chaos Engine 2.
