What is the best Doom port that just runs the game under XP with the old content? 190MB texture packs are out of my league, I just want to be able to play the game under a modern OS

Thanks s2325. I also just found ZDoom, which looks pretty good (if I can get AA working on it soon...).

OK... carrying on this retro-revamp-revival does can anyone recommend (if they exist) enhanced versions of Descent & Dark Forces?

I have read snippets about Dark Forces TC?!??!?!

There is hardware acceleration + high resolution graphics under ePSXe emulator, so it's "enhanced".

Descent

This is where it's at: http://www.descent2.de/
There are other enhancements for Descent out there, but this is the only one that's still being worked on.

I guess you need a video card with above average OpenGL support.

Also there's a lot of useful information right here:
http://home.arcor.de/hbredel/Descent...t-english.html

Good luck.

Descent 1/2 have both been ported to the XBox as well and run pretty darn well. Worth checking out.

Duke Nukem 3D (xDuke) and Shadow Warrior (xShadow) are also ported to the Xbox.

Yep

And all the Dooms, all the quakes, rise of the triad, Hexen, and "I think" Heretic?

I'd really like someone to port Forsaken too, but I can't see it happening now

For Quake, you most definitely want the 'Dark Places' mod.
