Keyboard configuration doesn't work!

Hello all,

WinUAE appears to have no manual and no dedicated forum, so I am asking this here.

I'm trying to add an extra key (warpmode) to my keyboard layout (Layout B).

As such I go to Input, change Compatibility mode to Configuration #1, and add the warpmode key. The key itself works well, however going from Compatibility mode to any other configuration disable the movement keys and the fire key.

How can I change my keyboard layout and still use these extremely important keys?

Hi Guillaume777 and welcome to EAB!

Which WinUAE version do you use? Toni recently changed the behaviour, so that the layout keys get added to the Input panel settings.

Unfortunately it works as designed. Input = do everything manually, compatibility = basic and easy configuration. (which is a bit better in next version)

Why is the compatibility configuration not the default of the "input" settings? That would help a lot of people only wanting to change one key or two....

?? It is default and it won't allow any custom key mappings.

I believe it would be better if, say, "Configuration #1" would initially be exactly the same as "Compatibility mode", except allowing custom key mappings. Basically, I want Input = basic and easy configuration initially, but allowing keys to be remapped.

In the current version, the initial "Configuration #1" has different key mappings from "Compatibility mode". Why this is the case, I do not know. I would like to manually edit Configuration #1 to make it almost identical to the "Compatibility mode", except I do not know how to do so.

Probably you have saved your default.uae after you (or someone else) have done modifications.

There is "Copy"-button in Input panel (bottom right).

(2.2 betas might include some improvement here in future..)

I also have long loading time even with warpmode, as well as flicking issues with my game (It Came from the Desert).

I guess I will just wait for the final version of WinUAE before using it.

Or just search here. Flicker in ICFTD can be fixed quite easily (try to tick/untick cycle exact) and long loading times mean that you'd want to use WHDLoad.

Some/many games have graphics issues without most compatible configuration. It is normal.

Gameports "merge" and/or "continuous merge" might be introduced in future 2.2 betas.

Merge = gameports configuration gets merged with current custom configuration, press a button and merge is done. (done but no button)

"Continuous merge" = gameports configuration merged like previously without possibility to override it (except by disabling this option) Basically best of both worlds -option, easy gameports option available without disabling manual configuration options (unless it conflicts with gameports)

Not sure what that does have to do with _keyboard_ configuration..

(and latest beta finally does what OP requested)

Well, as opposed to using a keyboard, those sticks are available to those who do not want to mess with a KB config... just thought I would mention it...

Read again, OP wanted to map extra key/button to specific function (warp mode) without losing gameports mappings, using keyboard joystick emulation or "real" joystick/pad wasn't the point.

btw, I don't think you can map extra functions to joystick buttons when using single button joystick (yes, I noticed PCB supports more buttons but only one is connected)

(nitpicking is fun!)
