Issue upgrading A1200 to 3.1 ROMS

Hi Folks

I have tried to upgrade the ROMs in my rev 2B Amiga 1200 from 3.0 to 3.1 using these:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Licen...53.m2749.l2649

As stock the Amiga has 42Pin sockets with 40pin 3.0 ROMs, all works fine

With the new 3.1 ROMs installed

When the power is turned on the Amiga beeps once after five/six seconds and then the display is blank

When the 3.0 ROMs are re-installed, all is good again.

I have checked that the pins are in the sockets and are seated firm.

Any ideas?

Cheers

So the new Cloanto ROMs are 42-pin ones? That's a bit silly.

Why? They are probably 1MiB and so need the extra address pins

I'd suggest fitting a HDD and see if that worked. KS3.1 may have a longer IDE spin up time.

Swap the two chips in case they were mislabeled

But the kickstart is still only 256 kB per chip, so they would need to burn the kickstart four times for it to work.

Not true. It could be one 256KiB image per chip and the rest could be zero

why you want to upgrade to 3.1 roms in your A1200?
there is no advantage, are not needed for any OS , or program or game

3.0 is buggy crap.. it doesn't even disable the PCMCIA when needed..
and it have this thing of not "autoconfigure" memory on some turbocards etc.

so it is the first thing I toss out when I fixed a dead motherboard I have repaired.

Maybe they labelled them the wrong way round?

Would swapping them over destroy the rest of the Amiga?

I would doubt it.

Swapping them around will only give randomdata so the cpu simply crashe with illegal instruction the first thing it does. so it will not damage anything. just put in roms with proper code and all is just ok.
(the same thing happens without roms aswell)

I tried swapping around the ROMS without success. I have sourced a 40pin set of 3.1 ROMs and these work fine.

I would like to add that the seller of the 42 pin ROM set did try to assist with the issue and has offered a refund, so a credit goes to the seller for their customer service :-)
