A3000 Rescued from Estate Sale

Hello friends,

I rescued this early A3000 from an estate sale, and of course it has had the original battery on it for many years. 1.4 Alpha ROMs

I removed the battery and soaked the area in vinegar for about 10 minutes. The board lamination came off and it turned green. What other steps should I take? The green doesn't seem to come off. Luckily, the damage "seems" limited to the battery area where no traces are broken, hopefully. The battery acid seemed to seep *under* the lamination, so it did not spread so far.

Anyway, the machine still works fine for now! It even came with a DKB3128 fully populated with 128M of RAM.

You ought to measure the traces near the two chips to the left of the picture just to be sure.

It's not the worst I've seen, you were there at the eleventh hour..

Here is the post cleanup. I cleaned the corrosion as best I could, then covered with clear nail polish.

Great save!

But no rest for the wicked. Components FB485, R470, R469, C495, U477 and U480 and especially the traces surrounding ground zero will eventually corrode. Vinegar or not, battery acid is hard to stop. You can see this by desoldering or even re-soldering the affected area. It will act like trying to mix oil and water - very hard to work with.

This is probably why Chucky is doing his ReAmiga 3000.
