That's cool! Specs say minimum 30kHz on D-sub for that monitor. Apparently, it syncs down even further

But the technical specs for the Philips says it has a vertical refresh rate range from 56Hz to 76Hz, which isn't good enough for a 100% smooth scrolling.

I use this only for my main machines (PC and Amiga 3000 plugged into it)

For all my other Amigas and Commodores / ZX Spectrum machines I use my old Philips 19B LCD with upscaler, or my Thompson 4121 CRT / OR Commodore 1084S. I prefer the Thompson monitor as a CRT, it has a good picture and all the commodore / scart inputs.
Where can I get that Phillips monitor new? Do 15Khz games look great on it?

Where did you see that? I'm seeing 23-80Hz.

I would be more concerned about banding. This being a PC monitor, primarily.

Some piccies would be nice, as always

My favourites are the NEC MultiSync or AsuSync.
If you get them in 4:3, they are perfect. All frequencies working. Just need VGA adapter. 15 inches or 17 inches. Perfect.

Scanning Frequency
30 - 83 kHz (H) / 56 - 76 Hz (V)

edit: Ah, ok. According to the manual via HDMI connection you get the 23-80Hz range. So you would need a HDMI converter/Indivision MK2 if you want the proper 50Hz.

I would guess that either that 56Hz VGA value is an approximation, and the monitor syncs perfectly fine at 50Hz, or the panel is 23-80Hz capable on all inputs. It's just not important for PC users to state that for each input.

Anyway, I'm glad our friend is getting a nice picture with his Amiga I wouldn't mind his sharing his desktop and some games piccies with us.

I would never guess that. VGA normally outputs 60Hz only, a very few can do real 50Hz. For HDMI it's safe to assume though.

But VGA is just a connector It doesn't mean anything. It's the machine which outputs this or that, and the panel on the other side that accepts this or that.

Example: My Sharp TV has a VGA input (among all the other digital and analog dingleberries). That VGA input will accept Amiga's 15kHz/50Hz signal without any problems, and provide a beautiful PAL image with smooth scrolling. The panel supports 15kHz/50Hz on all inputs and that's it.

NOT to say that every VGA input will accept 15kHz/50Hz! If that is what you understood from my post, then we have a misunderstanding. Perhaps I should have been more clear. As a matter of fact, most VGA connector equipped screens will not take Amiga's frequencies.

I was talking strictly about rcpamiga's Phillips monitor. If he gets a nice PAL image on his monitor then that panel accepts 15kHz/50Hz via VGA, regardless of what the specs say. Not the first time for a panel to support frequencies outside its specs, really.

Unless, of course, rcpamiga has some kind of scandoubler and he's just yanking our chains

Hi all. Here's one picture (albeit a little skewed...) shot with my phone. I had to turn off the lights, because the phone could not cope with those :/ No WB yet, still problems with the A600...

*EDIT*

One more with the lights on... Not the best one, but something.

*EDIT2*

A couple more with daylight. Moire is horrible in the other one, sorry. The reflections are also kinda hard to tackle.

Sony BVM20F1E, RGB scart and A600 with Furia etc. Shot with a tripod from ca. 60cm (24 inc) distance.

Philips Monitor proof

Hi all
I did not mean to stir up a controversy, but yes the monitor does sync ok from its DVI port into my Amiga 3000s RGB 15pin port, not its scan doubled 15 vga port ( because on my 3000, it does not work! ). ( I use the HDMI port for my PC) I was just as surprised as anyone, because I was not expecting it to work, but it does! No scan doubling!

I did buy an HDMI upscaler but did not need it for this setup.

Here are some pictures (not good, shaky hand) but is is a good crisp picture, no lines or shadows etc.

I purchased the monitor locally just under a year ago, and am very very happy with it.

Thanks

I use a Benq G2420HD which works with native Amiga resolutions and looks very nice. Only cost £30 off ebay. I also have the Benq G2420HDBL which doesn't work on an Amiga without a scandoubler- never realised that when I bought it.

The ideal monitor for an Amiga is a Hantarex or equal arcade monitor as these can be finely tuned and are professional gear (unlike Neo-Geo (TM)). I think also some awesome Atari Games arcades had great monitors that supported 15kHz. Unfortunately, arcade monitors come to be mounted in a cabinet and so no plastic cover. But they are the ones.

The ideal picture size for 15kHz is max 21". That said, my (once sale price $5000, bought used for $5) Tandberg is doing fine at 32". But it's for the living room, not for a professional computer.

31kHz means you should leave CRT, as only flickery crap was made, not fit for the living room or an office until >85Hz because of the thin phosphor layer.

All flatscreens suck, except those who can go twice progressive Hz with Black Frame Insertion. Like the two PC monitors I have.

They just don't have the chips. I've seen one exception, the JoyTech 8" for PS2 Slim. I have 5. Obviously no overscan cos you know... consoles. But scrolling and moving graphics isn't trash, like on 2023 flatscreens.

Arcade monitors are all well and good, but never choose Hantarex. :-) Go for a Wells Gardner or some Japanese chassis instead.

15kHz arcade monitors are not very high resolution though, the tubes are the same coarse pitch tubes as used in old TVs. Then there's the problem of casing it. I wouldn't recommend for anyone to run an open frame arcade monitor on their desk regularly.

The ideal monitor for Amiga is the one you can afford - don’t feed the speculation bubble around PVMs and the likes.

The Amiga was never intended to be used on such high-end hardware - the games were supposed to be displayed using either composite or an RGB monitor like a 1084S. Anything else is not period accurate and most probably won’t display what the original designers intended.

IMHO the best thing ever is to purchase a cheap consumer TV and use composite. It naturally smoothens edges and dithering effects, giving the “CRT look” everyone is so frantically looking for these days.

The higher dot pitch 1084/8833 is a great choice for the Amiga. It is a rather small tube though.

My brother gave me his old 42 inch Sony KDL-42W653A LCD, works great through SCART and composite.

I spent ages trying to degrade the picture and make it blurrier, and turning off all it's swish features :-)

Interestingly it has side by side picture - but only composite/RF next to HDMI

So I bought a cheap SCART to HDMI, and have my A1200 and A500 on the same screen for stunt car racer and other link games.

Agree with all of the above. I've had good experiences with Hantarex, though.

Only thing I would add is if you can service them yourself, make sure you get one that has a service manual available.

I miss my NEC 3D purchased back in the day. I ran it to death though, so it lived hard and died well.
