If Mequa knows the number of the disk, you can get it on the file server in 'Collection/Coverdisk/Amiga Format/Subscriber Disks'.

It's from Amiga Format Issue 89 (October 1996) - I just added it to the Zone anyway.

I tried to download the other Issue 89 coverdisks from AMR but the server was down.

BTW: Random song title generation (similar to the one in AlgoMusic, but fully configurable) is on the way for SoundHelix.

The Java Web Start version has been enhanced. It supports the same (limited) commands now as the console version. See http://www.soundhelix.com/applet/SoundHelix-applet.jnlp

Happy

SoundHelix 0.0.4 is out now! Grab the binary at http://www.soundhelix.com or try the applet version at http://www.soundhelix.com/applet/SoundHelix-applet.jnlp

0.0.4 includes song name generation, similar to AlgoMusic, but fully configurable in the XML file. Songs can be recreated later simply by specifying their song names.

Check out the example XML file at http://www.soundhelix.com/applet/exa...elix-Piano.xml

The SoundHelix applet now includes Facebook support (since 0.0.4.4), which lets you share the current song on Facebook with two clicks.

Excellent work!

Do you have plans for a J2ME MIDlet version for mobile devices?

Perhaps a conversion to iPhone could sell too, especially with ringtone capabilities

AlgoMusic and SoundHelix raise an interesting philosophical question: Could computers ever compose what is considered "art" music?

While the kind of trance tunes generated by SoundHelix are not normally considered "art" music (but still impressive for a machine), perhaps in future, if we have an expert programmer with the musical genius of Mozart, we could see software producing music of sufficient quality to be considered "art".

The question here is though - who is the real "artist", the computer or the programmer? Suppose one day, we see a sophisticated computer program churning out symphonies to rival that produced by the finest human composers.

I would argue that each individual machine composition is not a unique "work of art", but in reality a variation of the same themes enabled by the programmer/artist (in this context, the programmer is both artist and software engineer).

In actuality, the use of computer algorithms to compose music is just another, albeit high-tech tool in the musician's toolkit. The Amiga's Paula chipset and AlgoMusic were forerunners in this form of music generation. Hopefully SoundHelix will be just a new beginning.

Thanks!

I'm considering doing this, yes. Probably rather for Android than for iPhone, though.

All examples from YouTube are now available for download here: http://www.soundhelix.com/audio-examples

Ah, I used to love messing about with AlgoMusic years ago... it was such a shame that there wasn't a way of exporting those tunes into a Protracker format or something, but I guess that would go completely against the intention of the software, not to mention probably would have been a bit of a headachy feature to implement.

SoundHelix 0.1 is out now! Grab the binary at http://www.soundhelix.com or try the applet version at http://www.soundhelix.com/applet/SoundHelix-applet.jnlp

If you have used SoundHelix before, make sure that you flush your Java cache before running the applet, otherwise SoundHelix might load a cached version of the XML file.

Still think a "per channel" midi export function would be handy, especially for musicians wanting to import the MIDI into a DAW such as Cubase or FL Studio piano roll.

THAT would make for an even more interesting project as you could have tunes made with SoundHelix and then rendered using VST synths.

Why don't you remote-control your VST synths via MIDI using SoundHelix in realtime?
