Amiga NIC and maxspeed
So i read that the Amiga cpu is the bottleneck when it comes to networkspeed. My question is do i get better speed with nic with rj45 cables or should i stick with my wirelesscard that gives me aorund 575 kb/s. My Amiga1200 72MB & Blizzard 1230IV/SCSI kit. PCMCIA card: Thomson Speedtouch 101/prism2v2

This is the best speed you can get with 030. In order to get more you'll need to get yourself 040, 060 or Vampire 1200.
Do you use Roadshow TCP/IP stack? |

Ok so the speed has nothing to do with what kind of nic you are using then? So i wont get better speed with a LANcard vs Wirelesscard? No i am using Amitcp 3.0b2. Is Roadshow better?

AmiTCP is fast as well, nearly as fast as Roadshow.
060 or Vampire give a huge speed boost. I don't remember 040 as it was 10 years ago I last used it. With 060 I get 970KB/s via FTP. However, with Vampire 600 and Netgear ethernet 10/100mbit card I can get 1,9MB/s via FTP using Roadshow TCP/IP |

Ok, another question whats the best FTP program for WB Classic. Ive tried many programs like Gofetch, FTPmount, Amiftp and none of the is working properly. Some crashes and amiftp gives 20kbs for me. So whats you suggestion of a good ftp/transfer program for many/big files. (PC -> Amiga)

The latter of course takes CPU power, and require much more advanced drivers. For prism2, some cards can do encryption (TKIP and/or CCMP) in hardware, while others don't, you may want to use encryption on your wifi network that the wifi card in your Amiga can do in hardware. Sadly, there are no modem wifi cards for Amiga, so it always means running a legacy wifi network (802.11b, 2.4GHz). A work-around for that is to get some ethernet-wifi bridge that supports modern wifi and that can plug into ethernet NIC on your Amiga. That's what I do, using raspberry pi zeros typically as bridge, but there are lots of dedicated ones around, and for example any Apple Airport can do it too. |

Ok i just posted a YT speedtest on my machine here:

There are other FTP clients than mentioned by you.
Try AmiFTP, AmFTP, ATC - AmiTradeCenter, mFTP. |

Anyway 13 Megabyte in 56 seconds. I just want my other lancard to see how fast it can get. And maybe skip the wifi totally.
(Since here im using WPA-TKIP) |

Yes, and it crashed. AmiFTP seems better, i tested now and i get around 2.75Mbit over WIFI WPA and using a little less cpu (36 sec for 13MB)

Do a test with ttcp against a computer on your local network, then you will see what speed the hardware+nic driver+TCP/IP-stack is capable of without introducing unknown slowdowns from the ftp client, which often suffer from inefficient disk IO.

The syntax is "ttcp -s -r" where -s is to not print received data to stdout. I have not tried with iperf, but ttcp will work with anything that sends data to it without expecting anything back.
If you compile ttcp on the linux server, the syntax would be "ttcp -s -t amigaiporhostname". Last edited by patrik; 10 September 2017 at 18:48. |
