To avoid a new thread......
Hi all. I have just spoken to Elbox regarding the SharkPPC. Initially the guy I spoke with said that he COULD NOT speak about it. On pressing him he stated that the board exists and is being developed for AmigaOS4. I asked him if there were legal reasons why SharkPPC were not yet available. He replied, "Hyperion are adamant that no extra licensing is required from A.inc for the support of SharkPPC in AmigaOS4". The availability of SharkPPC drivers in AmigaOS4 are required and then SharkPPC will be made available. Additionally he felt that support for DMA PCI cards in AmigaOS4 mediator based machines should not be hard to develop.... |

The SharkPPC cards are just rebranded PCI accelerators for Apple Mac's
Notice the similarity (they are identical) Available now for $20 (400MHz G3) and $40 (500MHz G3) respectively. http://www.sonnettech.com/product/crescendo_7200.html I'll be damned if I am going to pay €200+ more for what at most will be a firmware change, and more likely just a different colour heatsink :-) Anyone with an AOS4 supported PCI bridgeboard, AOS4 SDK and some programming experience should get one and start the ball rolling. @alexh
hmm true, yet when people are willing to pay $800+ for a 040 603e BPPC, it suggests there is a market for the SharkPPC |

There has to be a BIG "gotcha" or Hyperion would have done the driver and would be selling the boards (bought from) Sonnet together with AOS4 for classic.
They are not stupid, a "couple of weeks" work to vastly increase their potential user base, they would have done it. Nope there has to be a gotcha and that is why they didn't do it. |

That is almost a certainty. I posted this over at Amigaworld.net where Rogue from Hyperion posts. It will be very interesting if he makes a reply... |

If I were a guessing man... it would be... that Sonnet didnt make them anymore and couldnt supply more than a handful of back stock.
Or they would make them, but freescale dont sell those chips anymore. |

Elbox does not freely release the documentation of how to make drivers for mediator devices. They are quite anal about it.

@alexh
you say identical, are you certain? How many mods could Elbox make to them?? I wonder if the mods are something a home hacker could do?? At $40 dont you think it worth taking the chance and buying one of these now??? I am tempted! |

Just look with your eyes, they are the same board with a different heatsink.

If you were really interested, you could perhaps contact Sonnet and see how many they have in stock and what price they could do for all of them. If they have more than 100 units you could maybe get them all and entice a developer into writing the drivers with a free board. I think you could resale at 2x price with AmigaOS drivers without ripping anyone off. Last edited by alexh; 30 November 2007 at 20:20. |

Alex,
Have looked at the Shark PPC on the Elbox website and waiting for OS 4 to be released. To me at present to trowel through e-bay to find a PPC Blizzard for silly money when the Shark worked out to be nearly the same price as a Blizzard with a much faster CPU. How we are saying the Shark is the same as the card on sonnet website!!! PPC for $40 plus postage must be worth a punt. Would the drivers for OS4 and warp be that hard to write? I will be watching this post with baited breath!!!!! Thanks Para |

Even if its not the same card and it does look very similar - its still a PPC card that plugs into a PCI I cant see why it couldnt be made to work -
Anyone with Os4 and Mediator PCI busboard,Crescendo/7200 G3 400 MHz want test it out maybe the Shark support is allready included with Os4 Classic?> |

...sadly I can't imagine OS4 will run on such a card for the reasons alexh mentioned: -What's the production status of the cards? (ie. would it have have been worth Hyperion's effort) -Rumors of problems implementing OS4 on Mediator. and most importantly: -I'm sure Hyperion would have mentioned it if true. (Such support would dramatically increase the potential market for classic OS4) Sorry to be Mr Pessimistic. |

Your probably right but when you point out the similaritys between the two cards and you look at the price $20 (400MHz G3) it makes you think - that would be sweet!
@Charlie Always worth a try -What setup do you have? |
