HD SSD Toshiba emits strange noises
Hi, friends!
I have acquired recently a HD SSD Toshiba, only for storing emulator files and one strange thing that happens with it and my computer, is that the HD emits strange loud noises when I plug the AC power cable of the computer and the HD is connected to the frontal USB port of the computer. What it can be? The only thing that is in the manual and that I not verified is it, is if my computer needs a special USB cable for computers that limit the USB power. May this be the problem? Other than that, it works perfectly. That is it, for now. PS. Help me please, before something worse begins to happen... Last edited by Leandro Jardim; 24 June 2013 at 02:05. |

Dunno why an SSD would make noises, but it's not going to be a problem if it breaks - you have up-to-date backups of everything, right?

High frequency coil whine/chirping? (DC-DC converter, if it has one, can cause it. It is usually normal)

You can hear high frequency noises when you write and read to it. It's normal.
So much for silent operation! In any case, what is the reason to use this drive as file storage? SSDs are better used in high performance needs like system disk, I think. |

Hmm... The drive is very silent when reading and writting, but the noises happen when I plug the computer in the AC power, that is, the power supply receives power and sends it to the USB ports even the computer being "off", lets say. I think this a stupid idea for making a mobo, but its how it works anyway.
And the HD emits so loud noises, that some times I think see it "jump" from over the computer, that is where I put it on (is an external drive). I aquired the drive for backup purposes, because the main HD was getting full very easily. And its very fast like Akira wrote, but I feel insecure to use it as a main drive because its an external drive, like I said before, and because I put it on top of the computer, not having space on my desk to put it on. |

Those ports that stay hot even with the master switch off are generally for charging devices like phones and tablets. You should be able to turn that off in the BIOS.
