I have a new 3gb 2.5" drive coming in a few days for my a1200 os 3.0 setup. I would have to make 3 1gb partitions then (using a 500mb now)?

Nope, you can use partitions larger than 1GB, but the system will report odd/impossible figures for the size because of the signed addressing that the FFS uses. Most of the time this matters not a jot, but occasionaly it will send somthing haywire, so it's safer to avoid the possibility.

If you're only using 500MB the you could have 3x ~8O0MB in the rest of the drive with no prob's, or 2x 1GB and a 400MB.

To be honest their are no right answers for the partition siszes, just what is convenient and reasonably safe. If you want you could set the drive up with lots and lots of partitions of 1MB (unformated) to replicate floppy disks - but each partition uses some memory, so this is probably a bad idea

equally, just having one BIG partition will slow down access and any disk operations (optimising, de-frag etc) will take a very long time. I settled on the sizes I recomend coz they work for me.

100MB should be more than frigging enough for an OS3.1/3.0 System setup (with all goodies added, liek Scalos and MUI)

My A600's System 2.0 partition is 6 megabytes, and I still have space left in it

So far the system side I have left as stock wb 3.0 install, will magic workbench slow down my stock a1200?

No, I don't think so. It's just a palette+icon set, after all.

I use the size I do because after I've stuffed it full of system patches, extra utils and lots of fonts my WB partition on the A500 was 72MB... when I ran out of space on the drive. 120MB means you'll never (probably) have less than 40MB free on the partition.

MagicWB doesn't slow the machine down, but it does use up some extra chip RAM - I have a tiny partition (100KB) on the A500 that has loadwb and endcli only in it, for max chip and for testing.
