Thought I'd split these posts from this thread as it's a little bit off-topic

My favourite genre! So many breakouts for the Amiga and I'm going with Giganoid FTW! It has some kind of weird hold on me and I can't stop playing it.

Where to start...

1. You play against an opponent.
2. You can choose the skill level by selecting different opponents.
3. There are no 'bricks' to destroy.
4. It's actually 'Bat and puck'

Just some of the differences It's a really nice game and quite addictive

Cybersphere (Full registered version) it even has a two player mode.

But the best game ever in this genre is the MS-DOS/Mac version of the German game
Bolo by Dongleware

It is a colorful and much improved sequel to the monochrome Atari ST classic of same name. The game is made by the creator of cult games Oxyd and Per.Oxyd.
This is the single most innovative breakout clone ever made. Your paddle can move in any direction but not through the bricks (and some bricks will kill you on touch!) and holes that can be anywhere on screen suck up the ball instead of only the bottom of the screen being deadly.
Almost every one of the 50 levels introduces a new gameplay element. Physics effects such as rubber bands, magnetism, gravity with varying ball sizes and weights, varying inertia... the list goes on... bombs, switches, teleports meditative music in the background etc.

There is a yahoo group about it
http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/bolo-dongleware/

PS: It works in Dosbox and I have the original cd and the update patch file here...

To add to my last post, I just found out Bolo is abandonware. It is available with some screenshots and install instructions for Dosbox (in French) at LTF abandonware:
http://www.abandonware-france.org/lt...jeu.php?id=958

The only thing the instructions are missing is to force refresh rate to 60 Hz with DXdiag->more help->override value = 60 and also set cycles=max in dosbox.config for perfectly smooth gameplay.

As the OP didn't mention Amiga, Popcorn on MS-DOS CGA (works on DosBox with very low cycles)

http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/popcorn/screenshots

My favorite, and I played this kind of games a lot
It features lots of bonuses, nice layouts, it's really really good!

Oh and interestingly enough, the GFX are made by Frédéric Raynal (the guy behind Alone in the Dark, Little Big Adventure 1 and 2...), it is one of his first games if not the first

Interesting article (Google translated from French)
