Easynet wireless PCMCIA from AmigaKit

Hi,

does anyone use this with an Amiga 1200? How it performs, what are the advantages / problems if there is any?
I want to buy one but want to see if it's really "Easy"...

Thanks.

I use the EasyNet software package with a wired PCMCIA adaptor & it works great.

However, I could never get it to work with my NetGear MA401 WiFi card.

That said, I've not tried the adaptor AmigaKit sells, but I would assume that it works fine, since it's from AmigaKit (I trust them).

I have used the amigakit wireless pcmcia card. It works great but the only caveat is only WEP encryption is supported....

If you already have a tcp/ip stack, then you could just buy a cheap compatible wlan card off ebay and download prism2.device off aminet.

The prism2 package contains a list of cards that are known to work.

If you have nothing, then the amigakit package becomes better value for money, as it seems they have licensed amitcp to sell with it.

This is not a software fault, but hardware compatible with the A1200 PCMCIA port is only 16 bit (meaning only encryption possible is WEP).

Indeed & that is why I purchased it...cheap price for an all-in-one solution...plus Mathew added support for previously unsupported NIC upon request

I have a wifi card from amigakit, but when press "online" in miami/easynet, the led blinks but no connection. I disabled the security in my router (to see if the problem) but the same... led blinks and nothing. ;( My card is an orinoco, yours?

You must not mix / install multiple TCP stacks together - you will get problems.

The LED blinking means it cannot find the SSID wireless network. Goto EasyNet's Interface Config, select prism2.device, then select Settings to enter your wireless network's details.

Please explain the relationship between 16-bit pcmcia and the supported modes of encryption?

The linux guys have managed WPA on the prism2 chipset..

http://asndotone.blogspot.com/2007/0...d-and-wpa.html

It's probably a CPU based solution, as prism2 is quite ancient.

I went for a Ethernet based PCMCIA solution just because I didn't want to downgrade to WEP on my WLAN router.

I'd buy a PCMCIA WiFi card for my miggy instantaneously, if it supported WPA... Well, I can always hope that it will happen someday

One solution is a wlan bridge.. You still need ethernet for the last meter though.

Yep, thought of it... Well, since my tower is just beneath my router, it's fine like this
If I'll ever have to move my tower from there, I'll think of using a wlan bridge. Thanks for the suggestion

I have three OS installations (in three cf cards) with three differents stacks.

The led blinks when press ON. The router is in front of the card.
I selected prism2 -> Wireless settings:

Wireless network name (SSID):
nameofmywifinetwork

Weptype:
none (I disabled the security in the router)

Network type:
infrastructure

Save changes.. reboot... and again led blinking when press on in easynet. ;(

(You have a ticket in amigakit support).

I cannot explain, because I don't know how it works/doesn't work.

All I DO know is that I read it somewhere...sounds like what I read was wrong...doh!

Perhaps it is true and no 16-bit and WPA capable wireless chips exist. Maybe whoever wrote what you read knows this but decided to feed everyone a dogma without explaining the rationale behind it. :-)

I'm ready to admit that I don't have an encyclopedia of all the world's wifi chips and their capabilities in my head.

I'm just trying to recall where I read it...although quite willing to admit that I could have been misinformed...this is the internet we are talking about.

IIRC, the Orinoco Gold have WPA. Orinoco Silver have WEP (64 bits encryption) and Bronze version have... nothing(!)

BTW: I have here a (non-working) Silver and a working Bronze. No gold...

It seems there are drivers out there for the Orinoco Gold that have WPA support. Really nice.
Now I wonder if there's a way so that WPA could be supported by AmigaOS3.x...

The card have the encoding/decoding directly inside it (hardware en/decoding). I really don't know if the TCP stack must have support to it.

I have once successfully converted Orinoco Silver to Orinoco Gold using utility named Alchemy, because my home wifi used 128-bit WEP and Orinoco Silver was only capable of 64-bit WEP.
