Happy A530 upgrades/availability...

Does anyone know where;

a) I can get hold of the latest GVP ROM chip? (v4.15?)
b) What's the best 68030 CPU to use with one of these (I've currently got the non-MMU EC version - not sure on which exact 68030 but it'll be something bog standard). Oh, and where best to get this from...

@Paul_s

I have some awesome news!!

I have just checked some reference pictures on amiga.resource.cx for the A530 and I can help you out with the GVP ROM

I bought 8 of those same ROM chips (blank) for my GVP devices
  • Impact Series 2 SCSI (A4008+HC)
  • My friends G-Force 040
  • Impact A500 HD8+ Series II

so I have a couple spare m8y so I shall program you the latest 4.15 ROM and its yours for being AWESOME

now insofar as the CPU, it would be worth trying a FULL 030 with MMU, and also put a PGA FPU in there. I personally would be tempted to change the clock to 50Mhz see if the board / chip could take that

Now PGA 030's are becoming a pain in the arse to get hold of! and as such eBay are spanking out some rediculas prices, nigh on £50 just for a fecking 20 year old CPU!!!!

put up a wanted on AmiBay m8, I shall keep my eyes pealed on eBay for you as well

now PM me your deets

aw excellent, thank you my friend Let me know if you need my address details for the rom.

With regards to upgrading to a 50MHz 68030 that sounds like a better idea.

Can I buy any 68030 50MHz / Maths co-processor and any old 50MHz crystal or are there specific chips I should be looking for???

the CPU / FPU as long as they are PGA and rated close to 50MHz then whoo (I woudl consider some active cooling since its in a confined space, something like a small slimline chipset cooler

now the Crystal needs to be 14pin DIL package, although you could easly modify most other 50MHz OSC that you can get from AmigaKit, infact Matt might have some of the 14pin DILL packages in store my friend.

alas there nothing worth anything on eBay for your project that I could find at the moment my friend.

I will need your address for the ROM chip though

okie cokies, PM coming up.

I've been looking round at the MC68030RC50C and they like you say going for silly money. New they are £87! funk that! Will have to keep an eye on fleabay or look elsewhere...

Thanks

edit: crystals on rswww are only £3 a pop so those aren't too much of an issue
edit: the maths co-processor is £38 from Amiga Kit. Bloody hell this faster stuff ain't cheap

I planned to get my A530 running at 50Mhz also, but got discouraged by another, reliable A530 owner who actually completed the mod. The result was unstable A530 so he rolled back to initial 40MHz clock rate.

IMHO, putting MC68030RC50C to run at 40Mhz might decrease working heat dissipation well enough to pass active cooling inside A530 case (just a educated guess).

However, if you want MMU-capable MC68040RC40B, I might help you quickly.
