PCMCIA adapter with 256mb CF Card issue

Hi all,

I recently purchased a lovely bog-standard Amiga1200 (no memory upgrade, no hard drive). Just a simple, basic, but perfectly formed machine

I've been wanting to play ADF's on my amiga. A little research led me to purchasing a PCMCIA adapter, a Sandisk 256mb CF Card, and some sort of workbench boot disk.

So far I have managed to copy some ADF's to my CF Card, and booted my Amiga up so that it can see the CF Card contents. But that is as far as I can get.

All these years of PC Windows useage has made me completely forget how to run programs on the Amiga.

Here's a link showing you my amazing attempt at starting ADF2DISK on my Amiga: [ Show youtube player ]

The left window shows the contents of my CF Card, the right window is the contents of the Floppy Disk. I'm just double-clicking stuff like a Windows numpty.

Anyone can point me in the right direction on how to convert the ADF files on my CF Card, to a bootable disk in my Amiga?

Remember that I dont have a hard-drive, and I have no idea what I'm doing other than what you can see in the video

Many thanks.

.lha is not an executable file, it's an archive like .zip or .rar. You need to unpack it before you can run anything.

To unpack the .lha file you need a program called LhA. If you don't have it yet, get this from Aminet: http://aminet.net/util/arc/lha.run
Double click it and enter lha.run ram: (i.e. add ram: to the end of the command line). Then select "execute command" from the workbench menu and enter copy ram:lha_68020 c:LhA. This will copy the 68020 version of the LhA program to the C directory of your boot disk.

Now when you double click adf2disk.lha, you need to change the command line to

lha x adf2disk.lha ram:

After that you find adf2disk in Ram Disk and should copy it to where you want.

Thanks for the quick reply. I think I've done exactly what you mentioned. it failed first time because I had the Floppy disk protected. on Second attempt, after typing in lha x adf2disk.lha ram:

I get this error:

cannot open "mathieeedoubbas.library", version 37.
lha failed returncode 900

Your boot disk is not complete.

Try this older version of LhA instead: http://aminet.net/util/arc/LhA_e138.run

After entering lha_e138.run ram: reply y to the question "do you want to continue" and s to the second question. Then enter copy ram:LhA c:

Now try again with adf2disk.

so far so good! I managed to open up adf2disk

as an experiment, I typed: adf2disk vroom.adf

it then started doing something to the blank disk and completed.

I restarted the Amiga and voila! the game loaded. although the graphics are completely screwed, I guess its an incompatabiliy with it being an A500 game trying to play on an A1200.

I'll try other games in the meantime.

MANY MANY THANKS FOR YOUR HELP

Try early startup menu and turn off CPU Caches.
Helps fix alot of games.

Always worth trying OCS or ECS rather than AGA as well.

To enter the early startup menu hold down both mouse buttons while the computer is booting.
