Wash amiga case
This is not retrobright. I have two cases (A1200, A500) with what looks like smoke stains and some other black markings. I was thinking of washing these out.
Anyone knows if there is a list of "do not do's" or "better do this" when washing Amiga cases. Any suggested cleaners? (obviously I am pulling the motherboard out before washing ) |

I just wash them in the sink with detergent for dishes, and if you live in Europe, you can use CIF White instead which is fantastic. Just don't use the yellow one and make sure you rinse it all off well.

I just put them in the dishwasher on the quickest, lowest heat setting and they look great when they come out. The only downside is that the paper stickers on the bottom may fall off or be damaged.

You can use some Active oxigen for laundry. I use it also for retrobright.

What about the Commodore label on the left. Is that washable too? Or I should I try to remove it?

I always remove the labels that can be removed and run it a 70c in the dishwasher.
Never had any problem with any model (consoles/c64 etc either). The only thing that deformed by 70c was an old plastic dust cover for an A500.. |

The badges are not affected by a wash. The only problem I've had with the dishwasher was with one of the grey/brown breadbins which produced a thin white coating on it (maybe calcium?) - perhaps a reaction to the detergent? It was only this one that did it though, so not sure what made it different from the other grey breadbins I washed. I managed to get the white stuff off again using some fine sanding paper. I've never had issues with any white/beige cabinets.

I ruined an Amiga 4000 front badge in the dishwasher, so yeah, they can be affected.

Was it a soft sticker badge or a hard one? I think soft stickers would not hold up well, like the Escom A1200 badge. Also, temperature and duration may be important, which is why I use the shortest, coolest program (30 mins, 55 deg).

Why put in the dishwasher and risk it when you can perfectly wash it by hand? It's not like the dishwasher will wash it better. Is it something about being lazy? Don't be lazy.
I have a scrubby brush that I use to wash by hand the case, and the aforementioned CIF (which I sadly can't get in the US )and I never had a problem! Use cold water only. |

Well, for me it was a combination of laziness (I have washed 10-15 cases) as well as my sink being too small to fit A500/1200 cases. I guess I could have taken them under the shower then.
I also washed all the motherboards in the dishwasher with the cases, so it was running anyway. |

It was the hard front A4000/030 sticker. The sticker part came of the metal, leaving only the metal.
And no, its perfectly safe to clean it in 70c water. And why you must speculate on wither its laziness or not, I just prefer it that way. I've done it for 4 years to god know how many Amigas and consoles / controllers. As long as there are no stickers on it, there is 0 risk. Usually I just put a bit of blue tape over the stickers if they can not be removed. I've even done a whole Dell computer chassis, although the black chassis got a bit stained after that, so no, don't do that =) If you want to do it by hand, by all means, do it. If not, know that 70c in the dishwasher WITH detergent or whatever its called, is safe. I've also cleaned a few motherboards in the dishwasher. I take it out before it has time to dry and hose it down with water used in ironing. I then put it in the hot air oven on 50c for a few hours to really dry it out, then leave it for a day or two before plugging it back in. Comes out as new. Although, on the Amiga side, I've only done 2 Amiga 2000 motherboards. The rest were console motherboards with bugs and mouse turds that I did not feel like cleaning by hand. And yes, I do run the dishwasher empty with special cleaners afterwards =) Last edited by Turran; 16 July 2015 at 17:02. |

BTW once washed and dried, clean it with some wax spray for furnitures like "Pronto" using a dusting microfiber cloth.

Well, as the amiga is white you don't notice much, but if you clean some black console like genesis you will see it looks much better, like new. It's just a thin layer of wax. Just like a car just washed or waxed instead. It may add some protection to the sun too.
