Hot shot use a variant of RN1 labelled RN1a.
RN1 and RN1a?

Both use the exact same read code Denis, there is no difference.

Like I said, thanks for jumping in, but it was established some hours ago what the protection was, it seems you couldn't answer it before which is why Barrys question went unanswered since July 7th.

And then "mysteriously", when I identify the protection used, you then pop in with your "contribution".

Looking at both dumps in HxC Denis they show 11 sectors?

Both my copies of HotShot are 'Budget' releases yet the copy of HotShot in the 'Hits for Six Vol 2' compilation is unprotected

I did the encoding with RN1/11sectors, used by Manhattan Dealers. Hot Shot just crash when loading complete with a GURU.

However, with the RN1a/12 sectors, Hot Shot loading resume with no error.

Read that bold bit aloud in your head again Denis, because i'm wondering how the exact same reading code can correctly read data encoded differently.

Just FYI BarryB it's Rob Northen. Rob Northern was a cracker from Classic

Good question. However, the result is there : If i use the same RN1 on both games, Hotshot crash.

The CTA can't lie on that matter MD use 11 sectors and HS use 12.

I'll post screens later.
