Eek DefIcons and shell problems

hi there,

I was following a tutorial on how to setup LHA in a way, that it automatically opens "unpacker" and extracts LHA archives into RAM:

Everything worked fine until some point. After trying to install some WHDLoad "installers" (some worked, some not) and comming back to FS-UAE after a few days, I noticed that double-clicking on a LHA file does... nothing!

I was trying to open a shell (Workbench->Excecute command) and also nothing! No window comes up...

I checked DefIcons like so: [ Show youtube player ] and noticed, that clicking on that icon does .. again.. nothing!

If I start shell and/or unpacker by double-clicking on their program-icons directly, both are starting and working fine.

Got not the slightest clue or ideas onhow to fix this - maybe someone could help me out or post some clues where to start?

Cheers

if nothing is happening then you need to check your DEF_Archive or similar entry and make sure its default tool is set correctly and set to start from Shell and not workbench or ARexx. Also incase you dont have UnPacker in C: or your paths arent setup correctly, make sure you reference C:UnPacker ([i]or wherever you put it[/i) and not just UnPacker.

Our best friend in such cases is always SnoopDos so we can see whats working, whats failing, or if nothing at all is in fact happening.

Yes because Unpacker works via Shell

To work from Icon, you have to set on the Icon Tooltype the function "Shell", see screenshot, also you have to uncheck "Prompt for imput", this does not interfere but shows the requested command on the prompt

If you don't have OS 3.9, the values have to be written by hand in the Tooltype

hello and thanks for your help!

So - where can I find "DEF_Archive"?

I have located unpacker in the C: folder.
Where do I need to reference the path?

Cheers!

Hmmm, where can I set the Tooltype function to "Shell"? (I have OS 3.2)
I thoguht this might workls when going "Icon->Information", but this does not do anything at all.

In the "prefs->DefaultIcons" there is no such setting(s)

Cheers!

I configured MagicMenu/toolsPrefs so i can quickly open Shell and unpacker without having to navigate to their folders everytime. but still, I can find no reason, why this strange behavior (see my 1st post) occurs.

That's incorrect; OS3.2 has a "Start from:" chooser just like OS3.9 has.

@Minuous
It was a given that OS 3.2 has that opation (OS 3.2 subsequent to OS 3.9),user "elowan" had not specified which OS he is using

@elowan
OS 3.2 has the same function and same place, Tooltype Icon (menu icon information)

Ahhh, thanks! this is what I thought - but like I said, if I single-click on let´s say "unpacker" in folder C: and go "Icon-Information" then nothing pops up!!!

edit: now it works (again?)

I guess something is pretty fY*ked

Is there another way to open the "information-requestor" besides clicking it and go by the context menu?

Are you sure you have OS 3.2?

- Highlight archive icon
- Icon Information menu
- "Icon" tab

Can you take a screenshot of your Information iconta "tab" Icon

Man, I would - if my "information" context menu would work again...

... and to make things even worse: I wanted to start "TextEdit" tool, and now I got a message windows instead:

"requires Version 47 of: Windows class"

WTF??

I guess some installer has overwritten a system class or something?
maybe this is causeing other windows not to work as well anymore?

man this sucks balls!

Managed to get the Info window open with Directory Opus and made a screenshot - but seems like images can not be uploaded and
embedded in a posting, because forums asks for a link instead of a path?!?

come on

I think you have mixed system files and libraries, which is why you have all these problems. OS 3.2 is a new system is not compatible with old libraries or system files (not all) from OS 3.1, 3.5/3.9.

Install clean OS 3.2 and don't add anything old into the system !

Yeah, looks like the only option here... always same sh*t with OS stuff is not protected from being overwritten... hate it so much.

Well - at least my apps are still working so... I will leave it at this.
For Shell and LHA Ive found a workaround (MagicMenu) so system is still usable.

Sounds very much like something has clobbered your Reaction files. Reaction is a window/GUI toolkit applications use to draw their windows and interfaces.

It ships with 3.2 so if you have your install media you might be able to fix this by copying the relevant files back into the correct places (Have a look in the classes folder of your system partition).

It does indeed sound like an installer has blindly overwritten parts of the OS without version checking, what have you installed recently?

Yes, I was trying this as kind of "last try" - copied "requester, arexx and Window class" over from 3.2 install media "classes". Now, the "information" menu works again!

-but TextEdit still complains about "window class version 47".

So maybe there are even more classes to be replaced and I need to copy over the whole "classes" folder form install media!?

What I installed most recently:

ADPro2, some WHDLoad installers (some of them installed software, that was needed to in turn have those loaders working, I guess?)

Cheers

Ah, I bet you're on 3.2.1! You will likely need the classes from the update package, or as per the PM I sent you, the one there

ADPro - I wonder if that uses Reaction (or ClassACT, Reactions predecessor) - it's installer may be what clobbered your Reaction files.

Ok - so I just startet SnoopDos (no idea how to configure it), but it throws out a "fail" when I try to do the aforementioned actions. Always the same:

"Libs:cybergraphics.libraray fail"

and I may add: FS-UAE reports an "Un-implemented Error" (funny thing, do they implement errors?) XD

will try to use the HDF file with WInUAE and see, if the issues still there... I have the feeling, it's FS-UAE which causes the trouble!

Ooookey... the very same HDF file works correct, when I connect it to WinUAE on Win11 - no issues, all problems gone!
SO it hs something to do with FS_UAE on Mac!
