Question 640x400 : Missing from the embedded resolutions

Hi again,

720x576 is ace on my 4:3 LCD, but I would like to be able to choose 640x400 from the available Full-screen ones on my
1280x800 preffered resolution bearing HP laptop (the closest offered being 720x480, which ratio is not 1,6 but 1,5).

I could activate 640x400 by simply installing Powerstrip (which would add several other resolutions to choose from) , but it's a time-limited shareware and as such it will probably disable itself after the dreaded 30-days period.

Could it be possible to embed this convenient 16:10 resolution in WinUAE, plz ?

Applications don't and can't add resolutions. It is card/driver specific.

How does Powerstrip manage to add some in there, then ? I suppose it involves some kind of gfx driver hack...

Also, I'd like to know how are determined the recommanded resolutions
For example, with my 1600x1200 preffered resolution bearing LCD, I can see 3 (*)
For :
  • 656x496
  • 1140x480
  • and finally for 1440x576

The resolutions marked with '*' seem to be quite the opposite of being 'recommended'. I think it indicates resolutions with an unknown aspect ratio :
Code:
656x496 = 41 : 31
1140x480 = 19 : 8
1440x576 = 5 : 2
Edit : Found the answer

So those new modes were set by Toni upon requests...
Some are really weird indeed (5:2 ). Do some folks get 640x400 offered on their 16:10 LCD without any hack ?

Nice reading in the EDIT2 about the two different ways EnumDisplaySettingsEx would list the display modes.
If I understand well, Powerstrip is less conservative than the original driver in reading the monitor's capabilities, and that would explain why additional display modes are offered when it's installed.

I think at this point, I'll post my .log files.

My laptop has a WSXGA+ (1680x1050) screen and I get 640x400 mode without any hacks.

You still don't get it? Your display driver and Windows gives the list of resolutions listed in WinUAE. WinUAE does not have any kind of built-in resolution list.

If you have an NVIDIA gfx card just download the latest custom drivers from laptopvideo2go.com - then you'll have 640x400 available under WinUAE (among A LOT of other resolutions).
