Decrunching two files - Great Courts 2

For a while I've been wanting to edit Great Courts 2, the great tennis game most of you probably know. Today I checked floppy content and found players names and tournaments stored in two separate files. Unfortunately both files are compressed and names can not be altered in any hex editor.

I am not very experienced coding or hacking person but thanks to my friends I downloaded few decrunching utilites and tried them on those two files I want to decrunch but with zero luck. What's worst, xfdmaster utility doest not recognize those two files are even crunched. I am lost here.

Can anyone help me with decrunching those two files please and give me some advice how to decrunch them and then crunch them back? Both are in The Zone (YEAR.DEF and PLAYERS.DEF). Thx!

i was able to decrunch the files using xfdmaster from aminet:
Quote:
4.Harddrive:> c:xfdDecrunch ram:PLAYERS.DEF
xfdDecrunch 1.9 (09.09.1999) © 1994-99 Georg Hörmann, Dirk Stöcker

Reading "ram:PLAYERS.DEF" (1238 bytes)...
Decrunching "TPWM Cruncher" file...
Writing "ram:PLAYERS.DEF" (1588 bytes)...

4.Harddrive:> c:xfdDecrunch ram:YEAR.DEF
xfdDecrunch 1.9 (09.09.1999) © 1994-99 Georg Hörmann, Dirk Stöcker

Reading "ram:YEAR.DEF" (3210 bytes)...
Decrunching "TPWM Cruncher" file...
Writing "ram:YEAR.DEF" (7696 bytes)...
you have to edit the files with an hex editor- since they are not plain-text.

edit: i guess the hard part is to find a TPWM cruncher. with a bit of luck, you can just copy the
edited files on the disk and the game will use them.

Thanks a lot emufan! I was doing something wrong I think, I will try it again and will figure it out I hope.

I know I have to use an hex editor, I did some editing in the past with Centre Court Tennis :-)

np
there is the sourcecode for the TPWM de-cruncher in xfdmaster_dev.lha.
xfdmaster_dev.lha: xfd_Developer/Sources/ASM/TPWM.a
any skilled asm programmer out there, who might take a look on a way to create a packer from it?

edit: wepl is the author of this de-cruncher, best known by whdload. in the autodocs of whdload,
TPWM is mentioned as: TPWM: Turbo Packer Wolfgang Mayerle
I could not find this tool, anyone heard of it or got a copy to share?

File Type: txt TPWM.a.txt (4.1 KB, 84 views)

I tried the game with decrunched files and it works.
Will be better maybe to crunch both files back to be 100% sure it wont cause any problems.

Thank you very much guys! :-)

good news.

i tried crunching a file with tpacker, but the program gets frozen after crunching ( A500 with Workbench 1.3 512 chip /1.8 MB fast memory):
Code:
tpacker year.def
Packing File ... Please wait
Crunching gains 59 percent
Write File ...
it simply crashes on emulated a1200.

edit: tpacker did work 7 years ago, so it's my fault
edit2: the following did now work under emulated A500 / workbench 1.3 ( 512 chip / 1.8MB fast )
Code:
tpacker ram:year.def ram:year.defpack
packed file looks good, does have the TPWM header as seen in the original

Hey all,

I'm an old A1200 owner, used to do some coding back in the day.
Well in the last couple of days, I decided to have a look at the old BlueByte games Historyline and Battle Isle.
Basically, I want to create a map editor/generator. I was having a poke about in the FIN files, using a hex editor to see what was what and was getting some very strange results.
I then learned that the files are crunched using TPWM encoding.
Clearly I need to decrunch them. That though is proving to be a bit of a problem.
The reason for this is that I'm doing this on the PC and an extensive search of the net has yet to throw up a TPWM decruncher that I can use. Most of the results are throwing up Amiga sites.

So, I'm not in a position where I can use my old amiga for this, so I was wondering if one of you guys would mind decrunching a couple of files for me, if I send them to you (and then you send them back obvs )

I'd be rather grateful if someone could help me with this.
Cheers,

Mike.
