MIDI ports?

Hi, a friend of mine is wanting to incorporate an Amiga music program into his recording studio set-up, but doesn't want to go the way of an actual Amiga. I suggested WinUAE, then he brought up the point of MIDI - does WinUAE support MIDI in/out/thru?

Thanks!

For MIDI, you need to switch on the Serial port in UAE and select the MIDI ports in the "Game & I/O ports" tab. A real Amiga is highly recommended though, as the timing is much more accurate.

In newest WinUAEs, MIDI ports & serial port are independant. You can use MIDI Input with serial port turned off.

How right you are. How does that work then? Bars&Pipes shouldn't work if it can't find a serial port. In fact, even with the serial port and MIDI ports disabled, it still plays the transport, which it never used to.

Hi

I'm a long time Amiga user, and synth fan.
I've used music-x for a long time, and it's the main reason I still own a real Amiga. I realise many people would think Music-X is not best sequencer etc, but I'm not really after suggestions for an alternative.

I've tried using Music-X under WinUAE (including the most recent version).
The midi output seems to be routable easily enough in the i/o ports config, as has been described by others, but it seems that the timing is terrible. I always thought it was due to my oldish PC not being able to keep up, but I tried it on a Core2Duo 2.6GHz machine (on XP, and no other programs running) and the timing is still way out, no where near close enough for sequencing. Having seen WinUAE run demos that pushed the A500 without any noticable flaws, I thought it might work out better

Is my lack of WinUAE config knowledge the problem, or is tight midi timing
asking too much from an emulator even with todays PCs?

Thanks for any advice (unless it's "dont use music-x" )

@Rocs9005:

Try to set "Priority" to Normal (or below normal, which is better) in WinUAE priority panel settings.

As a musician, i wouldnt recommend using UAE and MIDI anyway. (hell, i dont even recommend using music software on UAE)

No matter how hard you try to tweek the setup, the timing is still never as tight as genuine hardware.

Will this work with a USB MIDI interface connected to Windows?

I have not had any luck getting the MIDI interface "discovered" in WinUAE, from within the emulation.

I can set it up correctly (the config sees the Windows MIDI drivers), but no Amiga program sees it.

Maybe it's got to do with CAMD.device not installed on amiga side (I'm guessing here).
Maybe Toni has a better answer ?

There is no (yet?) "uaecamd.device". MIDI is always mapped to Amiga internal serial port.

Is it routable to anything but the PC serial port?

MIDI bitrate = routed to MIDI In/Out devices (if selected). Non-MIDI bitrate = routed to selected serial port.
