Help, my feet are melting!

I pulled out my spare A1200 case which has been in storage for the past couple of years in an original cardboard box (so I can sell it).

The case is still in great condition with only minor 'yellowing' on one corner.

After I pulled it out I noticed what looked like white glue on the bottom of the box, then I realized it was actually the white rubber feet which have basically decomposed

Anyone else had this happen to them?

Very strange and annoying

It happened to nearly all my Amigas and other machines too.
It seems to be accelerated in certain conditions but I dont have definite conclusions yet.

Its a b*tch to clean, try to not get any of it on your hands...

I've not seen it happen with any Amigas, but with other old electronics stored in an attic I've seen rubber feet and trim disintegrate into a gooey mess. I presume some sort of bacteria eat it over the years. They're easily replaced anyway, either specifically like the Amigakit ones, or a decent local hardware or electronics supplier will sell something similar too.

I've had it happen to some SCSI cases and one A4000. Incidentally, both were exposed to exhaust heat from another A4000.

My A1200 has a slight case of the same, after being exposed to a bit of moisture.

I've had an A500 where the feet did exactly that. Always wondered what caused it.

Maybe it was because it was in the box in the dark?

My other A1200 that was sitting on a desk is OK

I've managed to clean up the mess but the original Amiga box is ruined now so the moral of the story is to go check the feet of any Amiga's you have stored away in the darkness.

Probably not. Commodore tended to order parts from the cheapest source and must have got a bad batch. Making soft rubber parts isn't too easy - good raw materials, additives, right temperature etc needed. I have got my part on slimey rubber feet,too - bought to put under small items like plant pots. Got horrible mess.

Bah, computer feet. Worse it happened to a dashboard of one of my cars! Its surface melted to this sticky mess. Okay, the car was FIAT.
