Ok.....one 1200 works the other doesnt....and neither does my accelerator.

My a1200 with 3.0 roms is fine and reads disks so not a total loss.

The other 1200 with 3.1 roms has no life at all, black screen no led's.

I plug my accelerator into the 1200 with 3.0 roms and it just continualy cycles a black to grey to black screen.

Any ideas are gratefuly recieved.

both units and the accelerator are 100% dry.

Transfer the ROMS over?

What version motherboard is it? Is it possible you need the infamous "Timing Fix" to be able to use an accelerator?

@Alex

The accelerator worked in both fine before...they are both ID4's and i never had timing issues.

I can see no evidence of moisture anywhere.

i've put known working 3.0 roms into the 1200....still the same.

Take any removable chips off and check for moisture underneath.

It's too late now if there is though.

When something similar happened to me I left them in the Airing cupboard for weeks before trying them.

FYI: If any of you have lots of money invested in retro computers, you should take photographs of your collection in your house and store them remotely in case of a fire.

I know someone who found it very very difficult to make a claim after a fire because the insurance company didnt believe he had so many consoles and computers and thought he was trying to commit fraud.

Sure it is. Pure water is nearly a perfect insulator, it's the minerals in the water that conduct electricity. Ultra pure water, if I remember right, is up in the Tera Ohms (10^12). You can take a really clean board, submerge it in ultra pure water, apply power to it, and use it. But you have to make sure the board is clean enough to not contaminate the water. Distilled water that you get in the store is not as clean as ultra pure water, but it's good enough to clean computer boards.

The reason I suggest washing in distilled water is because you need to get the the minerals off the boards, wet or dry. The method I use.

1. First rinse with tap water and scrub both sides of the boards with a soft brush, shake off excess water.

2. Submerge and aggitate boards in a clean container of distilled water, shake off excess water.

3. As a final rinse do step 2 again with a fresh change of distilled water, shake off excess water.

3. If you have compressed air use it to blow the boards dry.

4. Place in 100F (38C) degree oven for several hours.

Regarding your 3.1 A1200 Just cycling,

You have disconnected everything from the MB, ie all FDD / HDD cables, Keyboard. and removed all the Shielding.
Does it power up when just plugged in with Video & PSU nothing else attached, use RGB output if you can or A520.

If you removed the Roms have you put them back in the right order and stepped so the first adjacent pins are clear.

When cycling, Using a Voltmeter check the +5 and +12V at the FDD supply connector being carefull not to short out the rails.

If left on for 30 Secs Do any of the Chips get very hot quickly, If so switch off, you may have found your culprit.

Small victory on the 500s! It's not great news, but it's not the worst it could have been.

I'd leave the non-working 1200 to dry out further - and cross your fingers even more than they already are...

It could have been MUCH worse...imagine if he gave away his spare A500s as planned, this happened & then he had no working A500s.

Who would have had to identify the body if that happened?

Seriously though Doog, hold onto the A500s you were planning on giving away...just because your others work right now doesn't mean you won't need backup machines very soon!

Great news! my a1200 is fine...it just wasnt dry enough...there was obviuosly some moisture still hanging around.

@fingerlickin

I will still give them as promised, i have the other 2 working ones and a spare mainboard so i should be safe.

I'm leaving my 1240 for another few days to dry out...see if that cures the same as the 1200 did.....keeping my fingers crossed.

Apollo's act like that without the help of water, lol...
Try the usual Apollo reviving technique: a bit of vodka on the connectors, a bit of vodka in your mouth...
