WOW! iff 8SVX audio

Just been filling up my 4 GB CF HD to go in in my A1200. Having set it all up via WinUAE I happened upon a CD full of iff 8SVX audio tracks. Thinking they would sound something like rubbish MIDI files I was blown away by the brilliant sound quality (even at 8 Bits, 22kHz!!!!).

OK I'm playing them through UAE, but I'm pretty sure they will still sound good when played on my real Amiga.

I don't remember playing this quality of music (by original artists) when I owned my original A1200 in 1992. The other good thing is a lot of the tracks sound like they have been ripped from Vinyl (with the odd bit of 'crackle'), so richer sounding than digital CD tracks converted to mp3.

The Amiga continues to surprise me even today

PS any good sources of original 8SVX tracks (yes I've heard of google)

then use eagleplayer on your amiga, and.... WOW !

Simplest and one of the best ways:

sox -V "%1" -b 8 -c 2 "%1.8svx" gain -n -0.5 rate 29072.9 dither -S

input file can be any type recognized by sox

lowest possible sampling error on Paula:

sox -V "%1" -b 8 -c 2 "%1.8svx" gain -n -0.5 rate 28604.0 dither -S

very high quality (should be comparable to 16 bit on 8 bit DMA channel), ECS\AGA with twice H line freq video mode required (AUDxPER=74):

sox -S -V "%1" -b 8 -c 2 "%1.8svx" gain -n -0.5 rate 47931.0 dither -f shibata

Most sample player can play wav and aiff on a stock A1200. So it isn`t necessary (if you don`t have a special reason for it) to reduce them to 8svx. Quality reduction is done on the fly.

Yep just play uncompressed digital audio (WAV files) on your A1200 using the custom chipset with AMP, sounds awesome

Cool, i was looking into this a while back but never got around to trying it properly.

I just converted an mp3 into the 8SVX 8 Bit 22kHz iff format with cooledit, then transferred it to my 020 A600 and it played fine with play16, streaming it of the cf card!

The quality was better then i expected, sounding similar to a lower quality mp3!

I never thought i would see the day that my 20yr old A600 would play a full Pink Floyd Track like this

Thanks!

When I first got a cdrom drive for my A600, I thought it was pretty nifty that you could pop in an audio cd and have it stream over scsi and play in real time 8bit stereo

Can sound better if you can preprocess samples in particular way - typical Amiga player for almost sure (never analysed code) will not use dither neither noiseshaping to improve subjective quality - in this moment correct resampling (which itself is quite difficult and demanding task) and dither with noishaping is better to perform not on Amiga (at least on bare and slow Amiga without DSP).
