Did any USA Amiga developers output many silky smooth games?
Is it my imagination or was the bulk of American produced Amiga games bloated, slow running and unoptimized?
Where as Euro produced Amiga games seemed to be a lot more optimized for the hardware and getting it to run in 50fps was an important consideration? |

Cinemaware was a US company. ReadySoft made some smooth games as well (Dragon's Lair).

I don't think any Cinemaware or Readysoft games run at 50 frames/sec...

Cinemaware and Westwood certainly produced some great games - but not the type of games I am talking about.
I mean games like Turrican, Zout, Hybris - Silky smooth 50fps games. |

You are right. American games were mostly tech 'garbage' or shovelware coming from other platforms.
There are no smooth, arcade-type games I can remember coming from there |

Black Crypt, not an action game, but it had smooth menus and smooth sprite movement in the intro.

The other thing about the American computer games market is that it was geared towards more serious games (e.g. strategy games, RPGs, flight sims) because of the PC/Apple tradition that held sway at the time. If you wanted to play arcade games, then parents/kids were better off buying a Mega Drive/Genesis or Nintendo coz it was a far cheaper way to go and had many more game releases than any of the computer platforms of the time there. |

Jaeger Software made the Fighter Duel series, which seemed pretty fast and "hardware pushing" (hires gameplay!!) to me...
Yes, it's a flight sim, but it was technically impressive, at least to me.. ;-) desiv |

While the few Canadian friends I have don't want to be mistaken for their neighbours across the border, they're still happy to acknowledge that the country is part of North America! The Amiga market in the U.S. was never all that huge, so methinks that most games published in the U.S. were distributed to Canada and vice versa. I used to buy Ami software/hardware and mags back in the day from both the U.S. and Canada, so that's the impression I got from looking at the dealer lists.

Good shout on wrath of the demon, an exception by the looks of things.
I have never really thought about it before, but Amiga games might be so distinct to other platforms because of it - a real Euro representation of gaming. |
