I have some memories of Trumpet Winsock for Windows 3.11, from the early days of mainstream internet and Netscape, perhaps using similar design?

Back in the day I kind of stuck with the board/BBS way of preferred dial-up communication as far as Amiga was concerned, didn't install AmiTCP until recent years.

Winsock is still part of Windows; you don't need a separate stack and dialer anymore but the interface as far as apps are concerned is not really any different since back then. It's pretty similar to bsdsocket.library in terms of the functions offered.

All of those (Amiga bsdsocket.library, Trumpet, Microsoft even obscure things like OpenVMS) socket API's are similar as they are ports of the BSD4.4 TCP/IP stack and its application level API.
