Social media is killing Amiga forums

I wasn’t certain if this was true, but I had a feeling that my forum use was dropping due to Facebook and Twitter.
For an unrelated reason, last week I left FB and Twitter. Since then my forum time has increased. The forum experience is far superior to social media! Easier to follow more in depth discussions, less spam and easier to avoid irrelevant threads ( like this one ).

So stop using those toxic social media sites and come back to the forums

Forums are social media! Its just a buzz word that the current generation of people think they invented.
Anyway, like any technology, instead of being against something, people need to adjust as things move forward, forums will still exist, but Facebook, Twitter etc are there as well, i use them all for different reasons they can exist hand in hand.

But personally speaking, i use only this forum

Never used Facebook or Twitter, but this is a personal taste for sure

I use both, there are topics that fit EAB well and there are other stuff that can be good on facebook. Spam can be found everywhere, both facebook and forums are social, both sometimes do not give me answers for my questions and both sometimes show something interesting. I am in many places, in few I write, in many I just enter to search and read.

I agree, in general really, social media is toxic beyond repair, and people shouldn't use it in grounds of it being basically immoral.

It's not about spam and shit, it's about being part of a system that creates harm to humanity. I personally chose not to and removed myself from as much as I possibly can, little by little.

Anyway I am going off-topic here, and don't want to, and although I still have Twitter, I recommend purging this shit. I've lost nothing, rather gained a lot of TIME and mental space to do better things, and the case for forums is that because they are specific, they are better, and usually have a base community of people that have been there for a long while, are very knowledgeable and you can get the best help possible in them.
Facebook is full of crappy advice and as many opinions as users it has, and little room for knowing who knows best, what is true and what is shit, usually with conversations decaying into a pointless bicker that leads the OP nowhere.
Forums are better moderated and generally a more trustworthy source of info than any shit on social media. Also easier to search and organize.

- Social media is as harmful as alcohol and drugs for millennials

What is not encouraging with these so called "social networks", it's the fact that it is rare to read something positive about them. They always stir up controversy, either with their policies, either with what is push in front on your wall, etc...
It is also well known that they are designed to catch (all) your time...

If you are a child/teenager/young adult you are warned at school/college/university about the issues that may raised from the bad use of these platforms...
If you are an employee you have to take care about what you "do" on these platforms...
If you are a parent, you are encouraged to teach your children how to browse/use these medias...

This is something I never heard regarding forums .
(on the contrary, I would encourage child/teenager/young adult, employee, parent to browse EAB to learn interesting stuff and participate to interesting debates, etc. )

I am not for or against these platform as they may have their usefulness BUT do think that the name "social network" has been chosen really badly.

If you need an imaginary life, it's because the real one is so deceiving.
Social networks creators just gave people something (remotely) looking like what they wanted.
It works like drugs. Giving something supposed to cure their unhappiness... and doesn't work but makes them dependant.

To be fair: spending more time in these forums is also not the best idea, because you are actually using it to supply for the time you used to spend on the other sites.
In that way, EAB becomes a methadone for the FB Amiga Group

Suggestion: the time you gained by removing your social media from your life, use it in other activities. Maybe you can learn programming for the Amiga

But it's not tied to social network, it's a general possibility

As usual, it probably depends by the use one person is able to do of the technology he use

Sure you can get addicted to anything, but "social media" is ENGINEERED for you to get stuck to it, in the same way a cigarette, alcohol or cocaine are.

No they are not And they can only take over what they are allowed to. It's people's fault, and we as the people can change that.

I still think any forum I would visit is 100% more trustworthy, active, and a better source for information than anything found elsewhere.

The forums that DID die are the ones that appeared in the past to replace generic BBS boards, the socializing ones. Those are gone. But the hobbyist/specific/technical ones will always thrive, if only because of the treasure trove of information contained within.
