Elite like X3 trilogy experience

Hi peeps,
was wanting a more modern Elite experience so did some reading and went and purchased the X3 trilogy on steam.
Think I may have been a bit hastey - all three manuals add up to almost 300 pages of instructions.
Anybody here playing these, or played them? The first was released in 2005 but looks gorgeous.

i did play them or at least tried to i found them to be to much hard work for me which made me lose interest..

I found "Evochron Mercenary" to be the closest to elite which has the playability of elite and the GFX of X3.

Pretty much all the features of Elite but no more than you really want if that makes sense...check out the vid below....Oh and one brill thing....you can fly directly to the planet surface like frontier ( Elite II ) but it looks awsome

Evochron Merc looks pretty cool and more accessble than X3. Starpoint Gemini also looks handy.

Hmm it definitely looks to play from cockpit as well

Anyway i'm surprised i've not heard of this excellent looking game until now. Downloading demo. Hope it doesn't have save states or at least an option to ban them if it does. Save states in these games is very frustrating and i don't consider not using them as an option because it is actually an option available to you as part of the game

i'm playing x for years with savegames more than 200 hours, a lot of fun there.
But x isn't friendly to beginners. I suggest Terran Conflict to start with, this one has ingame some kind of 'wiki'. and it is a bit easier.
Manuals are useless except the controls, nearly nothing explained there.
