I find the average nes game to be much more accessible and easier than the average spectrum or Amiga game. The first Mario was actually very easy for the standards of the time

Yes, the NES has tons of awful licence games. But other systems too. But what the AVGN also shows are flaws (in exaggerated manner) in good games he usually like. But this is part of his entertainment style. |

They concentrated a lot more on playability than european game designers over there. |

NES not suffering from the "one button syndrome" is a big plus too.
As Retro-Nerd said, NES had its fair share of awful license games, but it also had some awesome titles as well. Sunsofts Batman movie tie-in for example, it simply puts Oceans version to shame in comparison, yes I know, racing part in Amiga version is great, but overall Sunsofts game is hands down the better game. Konami's LifeForce/Salamander arcade port is another classic I actually prefer over the arcade/x68000 version. |

The other side of the truth is that I never touch these console games >because< of this awful "second button to jump" obsession (although I could almost stomach the second button in the coin-ops).

I have no problem admitting that is a great game that outdoes most, if not all, of the Amiga/C64 library. But it's not an average game Last edited by roondar; 31 October 2020 at 23:23. |

Anyway, I actually agree that SM1 is representative of the NES due to it's massive popularity. But to me that really is rather different from being representative of the average game on the system. SM1 is far better than the average game on the NES, so I don't think it's representative of the average game. |

Hell yeah, I can play Snake Rattle & Roll, Ducktales, Gremlins 2 and R.C. Pro-Am any day. I'd include Duck Hunt in that list, but that's only fun on real hardware. Not to mention Mario 2 which is my personal favourite of the entire series - mostly because it wasn't actually a Mario game and thus was free to not follow any Mario principles. That game blew my mind as a kid, so weird and mysterious compared to the first Mario game.

Oh, absolutely!
But then I do tend to think there's value in just about every system ever released, even if I have my own favourites |
