Amiga Real Vs Emulator Questionnaire

In recent years has there ever been a census "Amiga Real Vs Emulator", are more users of the Amiga Real, or those who use an AMiGA Emulator?

I'd say there's almost definitely more emulator users, but I have no statistics.

EMULATION forever

Seriously, i use WinUAE since 2002

This emulator gives me NO reason to think to the real thing

Furthermore the real thing would be an expensive hobby, from what i see

For the future, i have no intention to buy additional machines

I virtually already have ALL that i need

I do use WinUAE for the most part, however, having/owning the real thing is also great.

Hence why I own most of the Amiga models now but are stored away in boxes.

Just like jmmijo, hardware in boxes while I use emulation on every day bases, not just for Amiga, but also even PC.

Space + aging hardware with expensive upgrade/maintenance is main reason that real hardware is more rare today. You can emulate amiga on phone, tablets, nvidia shield, other consoles... almost anything...

Yeah pretty much this and older PC games and occasionally some older consoles but pretty much Amiga and PC emulation.

I still prefer real hardware. It‘s still another kind of feeling to play games on real hardware and I like the competition to do things on classic-hardware which wasn‘t possible in the good old days. Last but not least the hardware is here and is waiting to be used.

Me too, the full Amiga experience is seeing it on a proper monitor and having a proper joystick in your hand.

But emulation is good enough.

I also have a lot of AMIGA in my closet that I haven't used for 25 years (A4000/060, A1200/030 A1200, 2 A600 HD, A500Plus, A500-1.3, A500-1.2, CD32, CD32-SX32).

I like to use WinUAE because it allows me to have all the Amiga models without having to have the most advanced and powerful Amiga i have ever dreamed of.

For me, emulation doesn't even come close. The scrolling is never absolutely flawless like on a real machine. The music doesn't sound quite the same. The mouse and joystick isn't the same. It has no personality and it's just... boring.

With all due respect I think anyone who's happy with emulation has forgotten what it's like to use the original hardware.

Having a high end Amiga is still to this day something to be very proud of. Something you've invested a lot of time, money and hard work into. A physical object you can look at, touch and feel.

Yes I do believe nothing beats the REAL thing but it's not always practical to setup a machine due to space limitations.

At least for me this is the case.

If I ever retire then I may consider setting up a dedicated Amiga space for many if not all my machines.

For Hewitson

I don't know about graphical aspects, but on sound issue i ABSOLUTELY disagree with you

I told this so many times, but audio quality of WinUAE is impressive

I compared it to the real sound thanks to the SOAMC MP3s

SOAMC is a project who recorded the modules of Amiga with real hardware

So if you listen to these MP3s you listen to the real sound

For fun and comparison i created MP3 with some modules with WinUAE

I simply compared the results and they sound the same

No differences at all, really

Better not make comparisons, this is just an informative statistic that may be useful for software or hardware developers.

It would be useful for statistics if instead each of us would write which AMiGA model or which Emulator he uses not only on PC but also on Mobile phones, Tablets etc..

I really don't understand .... why not comparisons ?

We are talking if we prefer use the real thing or emulation, so why not compare the two ways ?

Indeed if i thinked WinUAE isn't as good as it is, i probably switched to the real thing

So, as you can see, i'm making a comparison

I use both. But for action games i somehow prefer the real Amiga hardware though. Emulation is indeed good enough today. And yes, with proper PC hardware the scrolling is nearly as good as on real Amigas, there is no doubt. Sound is also very good in emulation. It's good to have both.

On-Topic: I also think there are more emulation user today.

yes, real hardware is old but is our hobby.
I have my a1200 from 1992. I have recaped, cleaned, used and enjoyed since then. And still enjoy everyday.
In that time I have had a lot of PC that are now in the trash so dont know what is older.
I really love winuae but sorry, it not the same feeling to me.
I understand why people use emulators but is a bit sad that the greatest amiga forum is all with emu users!

I wish I could, but my old amigo (yes, mine was male) was trashed 20 years ago and I have no space to put one myself

And I am completely useless at maintaining old hardware so whatever I buy eventually will die. Retro hardware needs to be in the hands of someone capable and willing of maintaining it. Someone like you.
