Not quite...

Both After Burners are called After Burner on the box and the main title screen but both games are After Burner II as they both have the II logo before the game starts if you wait long enough.

Most (maybe all) home conversions are After Burner II.

Same goes with the Arcades, After Burner II only came out months after the first one and I think you'd be hard pressed to find one that isn't actually After Burner II

edit: similar situation with Galaxy Force as well

Afterburner and Afterburner II arcade versions are almost identical. The main difference is that in Afterburner II you can actually use your afterburners to speed up. That function seems to be missing in Afterburner as I just tested them in MAME.

Based on this then Belgarath is correct in stating that both the Activision and Sega games are actually Afterburner II

Only the first of all Afterburner home ports for the Master System (tested 3/88 in the German ASM magazine) is based on Afterburner I iirc.
