Crime Inc - Lime Pink - The original GTA??
the original GTA??
http://hol.abime.net/6113 This seems to be a interesting Game from the notes on HOL "The programmer of this game launched a legal action against Rockstar North for alleged copyright violation due to the similarity of Grand Theft Auto to Crime Inc. Further details are available at Mark Gallagher's website." BBC News - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/3331651.stm Mark Gallagher's website - http://www.geeteed.com/hub.aspx Im not a fan of the later GTA games but the original GTA and Retro City Rampage - Now it seems we already have our own Retro City Rampage for Amiga the original GTA - Crime Inc I gave the game a quick go and indead there are obvious similarities - What I want to know - how do you control the character I know its using the Mouse but what are the ingame keys etc. -What do you think of the game etc - What do you think of the games similarities with GTA ? The authors other game Smash TV The rip off is also a nice game. OKso you just use right mouse button to talk etc this game is looking quite good but unfinished - also have to test it with fakemem to see if it will run on other amiga setups. To shoot hold Right Mouse button and click on person with left - looks the same a GTA 1 To change actions right click on character. and if anyone figures out how to use the editor - While trying the editor a zool 2 picture came up that ive not seen before. - for zool pic in map editor press F8 then I for other picture of M press N. The GTA wiki says "The game was originally intended to be named Race'n'Chase and to be developed for the Commodore Amiga, starting in 1996.[5] However, it was nearly cancelled due to production issues.[6]"
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gran...to_(video_game) One if the Amiga game packs was Race N Chase? Also they claim it was bug that lead them to the idea of GTA - But this was already the idea behind Crime Inc All very strange when you think it started with Crime Inc and ended with Retro City Rampage. |

Crime Inc is an unreleased game, but there are many screenshots on HOL. Is this game available to download from somewhere?

ECS/OCS too??
Wow... it'd be great if a group of developers got together and did a GTA like game for ECS/OCS amiga. |

From what I understood, the game Payback is the closest the Amiga has to GTA, but it requires a lot more power than an OCS/ECS system, right?

I am pretty sure that you can't copyright an idea. It's not like DMA stole any code or other assets from him right?

It wasn't just ideas he shared with them it was an actual playable demo at an interview. DMA did not to hire him but kept his demo and stole his entire game concept. It's comparable to Nintendo going after the Great Gianna Sisters game for being a complete Mario ripoff. Here is the guy's explaination albeit with the names of most of the players changed: https://web.archive.org/web/20171205...d.com/hub.aspx |

No, it does not.
If anything (which I doubt), DMA took inspiration from it when turning GTA into the game we all know. And that is not against any law. But given the poor quality of the demo, even this is highly unlikely. The idea of a top-down gangster game was not new either. Seeing that he tried to sue DMA/Rockstart only in 2003 after they hit big with GTA3 speaks volumes, too. I gave the demo a try and let's be honest: at first glance, it seems similar. But the setting is different, the controls are very different (like an RTS, clicking around with the mouse), and the main feature of GTA being able to drive cars does not even exist! What both games share is being a top-down gangster game and neither invented that genre. |

Don't forget there were other games that were similar to certain extent and could have served as inspiration. Thinking about Hill Street Blues for example, where you're a cop instead of gangster.

Wonder if anyone progressed anywhere so far in Hill Street Blues though. I like the atmosphere of the game but never reached any goals within, just drove up & down the streets...

I mean be honest they stole the idea.
The original that they developed on Amiga was probably more like Retro City and they just took his idea and probably the graphics. In the world of computing unfortunately I would say this is normal and quite often people who are "unusually gifted" can't comprehend that they are doing anything wrong. They might even improve on something 200% but it doesn't occure to them to credit the original person. |
