Do you like the AMIGA CD32 ? (Poll)

Hello Folks

Just a "little" Poll about a "little" AMIGA known as the AMIGA CD32.

I wonder,how the Amiga Board Community thinks about this curiosity.

For me, its a little Treasure in a small dark grey Box ....
( if Expanded with Fast-Ram, Compact Flash Card´n Stuff )
Otherwise... No

Ok, maybe for some Compilations Cd´s,
but as a bare bones "game Console, ? No thanks.

For the Poll.

The Option "If Expanded" also count´s bare bone expansion´s
as well. ( keyboard , floppy and mouse )

I think that every games console, regardless of make, type, power, etc.. had (or has) a part to play in the history of a universe we all enjoy so much (well, in EAB anyway). So I was going to answer 'yes' regardless.

As for the CD32 as a games console in its own right; I owned one when they first came out and loved it. Some games just seemed a lot more fun, despite there being existing versions for other Amigas.

I particularly remember me and a mate constantly playing The Chaos Engine over and over, start to finish. But we still carried on playing! And Subwar 2050 seemed to be brilliant with the CD32 controller. I even enjoyed the CD32 version of Liberation.

Sadly, the CD32 disappeared with my ex-mate!

...Perhaps I may be hanging around Ebay a bit more often....

I have one and always liked it, but don't get to use it very much these days.

IF Commodore didnt muck up it would have been better supported game wise, so its always a little harsh looking back at a machine that only had 6 months support.
Advantages over the A1200 for me were, no disk swapping! Esp in adventure games with 10-12 disks, full speech in games, cd quality sound, games that used more than one or two buttons, again would have been better supported later on.
Negatives were 1k of nvram, simply not enough and a truly awful decision by C; dodgy controller, but again there were other options to buy.

Nibbler is very proud of the Amiga Board Community !
Couldn´t said it better myself.

I use it almost every day;
( it´s expanded with an Pro-Module
with 8MB Fast Ram and a CF-Card ,Keyboard & Mouse)
Because i sold all my Amigas back in the day
(even a cyberstorm 060 A-4000)

If it wasn't for poll #1, poll #3 wouldn't exist. So I must say #1.

Just need to find one to buy at a decent price and I'll be ok. I sold my cd32 7 yrs ago for around $300. Ah well we all make mistakes

This Poll Options are there for a Reason

Take the little Nibbler for example, I like it only because it´s expanded
(i have no other amiga anymore )

So i use it as an Amiga 1200 with CD Drive, Fastram and CF Card.

The Only other reason would be (for me) to use it for compilations.
( if not expanded )
Just as a gaming Device "as intended" i would say....... NO.

That´s why are this poll option exists

I'll just say I have 8 consoles in front and under my TV and unexpanded CD32 is right in front of it

It is ugly. It is (just a little bit) too slow. Period.

C'mon guys, technology aside: It is butt ugly, even the CD lid behaves like cheap china sh*t.
And it misses 1MB+ FastRAM or some kindof SRAM cache or whatever. Chunky-GFX is clumsy kludged: fail.

I don't think you understood me. Lol. Of course people would prefer the modded over the stock. But to have a modded you need a stock to begin with. So yeah stock is more important to me as you can either leave it as stock or mod it till your hearts content.

Maybe I'm reading into this a little bit too much.

I vote for complications, well the case for me is complicated.

CD32 got ugly desing, there's ugly plastic quality, ugly pad design and ugly way of how You extend cd32 with additional hardware. Look how CDTV looks, how nice plastic is, it's like well designed hi-fi audio that You can keep in saloon in that days. For example sega cd/megadrive got good quality plastic, pad is also quite good, desing is avarage and expanding is much more worse that cd32 - I would call it gang-bang if You want to build genesis/sega cd/x32 and connect one into other one.

For good side - what is more important for me - is games, I give no shit about all those "You have cd32 and You can expand it into full amiga computer" (only reason to expand cd32 into computer would be to install HD and use WHD for even more games). Main purpose of console are games, and it's better if there are tons of good and exclusie ones. I love some cd32 games for quality, they are fun to play and they have great audio, sure - some of them are just bit patched A500 titles, but if they are great games they will be great on cd32 too. Saddly there also those shovel-were games that do not improve anything and do not use what cd can offer. And CD can offer lot of positive stuff, like no disk swapping - game is on one media storage, more space than floppy got - for extra stuff like animations, bonus levels and extra content. CD32 also got akiko so You can have both cd audio and amiga quality sound - some old amiga games require to choose only music or only effects.

Commodore got brilliant idea with putting A1200 hardware into console box with cd, but they faill with realization. They have technologhy, but they lack strategy. This toy lacks good memory unit for saves or some main directive that every cd32 game should have user-friendly password system. It have pad with good amount of buttons, but only few games use them. Big C= do not support it's child enough with exclusive games like Sega or Nintendo do, if You have A500/A1200 than You have no reason for cd32 (or You have if You are just like me sarch for best version of games). Big C= bundle cd32 with avarage and poor games. It's like cd32 got lot of potential to be somethnig great, but there was no commodore to realize this dream.

Ok, i get what you are saying now hehe

For the People that say its UGLY... well, thats a matter of taste.
The Plastic and CD-Top is really cheap, and i would prefer the slick Black look of a Mega-Drive or Sega Saturn.
Ohh, God, and the Controller is so Cheap as it gets, BUT the handling is pretty good. ( but i still use a SEGA PAD )

You can see Commodore was on its last leg.

But on the other side, the Mainboard is pretty good.
As far as i am concerned, The CD32 has far less problems with leaking Capacitors than other SMD Amiga´s.
So Thats a HUGE plus.

To the Design of the Console Again.. well
You can always custom paint it, but i would never do that, because those babys are pretty rare.
Hmmmm, i think with the Promodule underneath the CD32 and a black Gotek drive it looks pretty nice actually

I Screwed the Promodule ( the top ) to the CD32 ( the bottom ) for 100% stable connection
Thats how i like it.

I love the CD32, it was just totally underutilised during its commercial lifetime. Which is why I believe it'll be the Amiga community who ultimately create some of the best games for the system. It has to be the easiest console to develop for ever!

For the people who say it was underpowered, err yes so was the A1200 from what it was based on, but technically with the Akiko it was slightly faster from a stock point of view! But Commodore killed the CD32 with the A1200 even before it was on the drawing board!

I own 2 nowadays, but I absolutely *hated* it when it came out. I could not believe that Commodore would release such an underpowered system. I had the A1200 at the time (btw, still do) and to me, it was blindingly obvious that the first thing you wanna do is to throw in a faster CPU and some Fastram.
Now, I see that many consoles with better hardware failed too, so maybe it wouldn't have mattered. But the one thing I dislike is that there are so few expansions. For the 1200 you can easily get 030 cards, but for the CD32 you need to pay like $500 to get one of those SX expansions.. Crazy..
And If I look back and ask myself -which was the best game on cd32 - I cant really come up with any original exclusive releases that are truly awsome.
