Create image of a real HD

So far I have created backups of my real hard disks by using the copy command. However this copies the files on the HD only. In my case I would like to - if possible - create an image of the HD so that I can then, from WinUAE, try and recover deleted files.

Is there a tool which allows me to create an image of the HD on a CF card which I can then import in WinUAE and try and recover any deleted files?

But for speed reasons I would suggest to connect the HDD to the PC and use WinUAE to create the image file.

Or use WinImage if you haven't got WinUAE setup

You don't need a setup. Just put winuae.exe somewhere, right-click it, run as admin, use add harddrive and create image file.

Yes, if the HDD is SCSI then you either need a SCSI controller for your PC or some SCSI-to-USB solution.

I don't think that a SCSI-to-SATA adapter exists. You can connect SATA drives to SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) controllers, but not the other way round.

Thanks thomas, worked great. I now imported the rdf in WinUAE.

So should i now use DiskSalv to recover any deleted files?

Yes. Make a backup copy of the image file before you begin. Use Salvage mode in DiskSalv.

If you want to use a SCSI drive on an IDE/SATA bus, unfortunately it is not possible. The best and simplest way is to use a low cost SCSI controller - please see our SCSI controllers section.
Those adapters are for IDE/SATA drives to attach them to SCSI controllers !!

I am aware of ACARD (rather famous in Amiga world) but these adapters are the wrong way: they allow to connect (S)ATA drives to SCSI controllers. This thread is talking about SCSI drives.

Not sure what I am doing wrong but all DiskSalv (Mode: Salvage) seem to be doing is displaying the files on the disk. I tried Undelete mode but this also just showed me files on disk.

You have to mark the files you want to recover (use the black i-to-white i button), select an output directory and click on Salvage.

Easy to backup any drive including CF cards on linux:

Code:
sudo dd if=/dev/<drive name e.g. sdb> of=/home/<username>/<imagename> bs=10M
You could even pipe the output straight into a compressor such as xz or bz2.

What I mean is that in the "left" window I can only see list of files that I can already see on the drive itself (through Workbench). I cannot see files that have been deleted or lost.

Just to give some background: In this partition I remember more directories and cannot see these in the "left" window.

Well, files not shown cannot be recovered.

Check the disksalv-extras directory. There might be files without name.

Note that deleted files can only be recovered immediately after they were deleted. If you write other files to the partition, they use the space previously used by the deleted files, making it impossible to recover the deleted files.

When I mount the .rdf file on WinUAE I get three disks; one is the disk which I backed up (named "playtime)", another one named "Workbench" (but this does not show on the real Amiga, an old partition maybe?) and another one says "NDOS".

DiskSalv allows me to select the "playtime" and "workbench" but not the NDOS one. Is there a way to select the NDOS partition? Maybe my files are in there?

Ran the program, report attached. The device that shows NDOS is HD1, i.e. - shows "HD1:NDOS".

Edit: I need to correct myself. DiskSalv does not allow me to use the "undelete" function. It does allow me to use the "salvage" function.

Let DiskSalv salvage all files of HD1 to another storage device, then format HD1 and copy all files back.

Of course you cannot "undelete" files from a currupted partition. You could try with repair, but this will delete all files which cannot be revcovered. In the worst case it will leave you with an empty partition.
