Please try to extract build info so we can figure out some sort of versioning for the builds that you have. I have a hunch that the best build of the game will be the Czech CD32 version (will probably be the most compatible of the bunch too). It would be best then to see if we can hack the English data from the versions you have into the newer CD32 build. Also it would be nice if some of these data files could be let loose at some point. Andreas, If I show proof that I've ordered the magazine with coverdisc would it be sufficient to let me have a copy? I mostly want the magazine for the coverdisc as I can't read German. T~T (Only English, Japanese, and Spanish). Once we have a translated version with the newest build working, and come up with a way to edit the text, we should be able to do a cleaned-up English native-speaker edited version, as well as versions for other languages (I'm sure a German version would be great to put on a later Amiga Future coverdisc). I think maybe a "patch" should be made available that takes the Amiga Future release (or CD32 release?) and adds English support to it. That's what I've been wanting to work on. =) |

Hi!
I asked Andreas about sending a full english version to some EAB-members for testing and WHDloading. He said "yes"! BUT: please don´t share it with others! We should build up a testing and WHDload team. If we´re successful, we´ll return our work to Andreas. I think to release it on the Amiga Future CD first is a good idea and after that it´ll be downloadable. Please send me a PM if you want to test or WHDload it! And please tell me if you want ADFs or a depacked HD-version, or both And don´t be afraid about the original or backup. As a real Amiga-Fan I keep this gem at several places. Yesterday I really thought about my flat burning down and another lost Amiga Game So, don´t worry! Last edited by viddi; 09 November 2006 at 15:00. |

My main goal is to see if I can get the English bits to work in other versions of the game, as well as figuring out which version is which (grepping for some sort of version string or whatever) Quote:
Incidentally, did any of those disks contain any source code? That would be great for making a fixed version or updating the translation. Oh and lastly, anyone interested in this, let's thank Andreas for his help by picking up a copy of Amiga Future! |

Hi again.
Well, I think we should trust each other and do it this way. It´ll be downloadable in the end. So no problem. There is no source code available. Sorry. But do you want the game for testing? BTW: WHO IS ABLE TO DO A WHDLOAD-INSTALL ??? Thanks guys. |

Andreas told me that there might be a copy protection. Maybe you will be asked for a word from the manual. Please report if there is such a thing. In that case, we have to send an English manual to the WHDload-Coder and we must check if the existing manual is correct. Andreas also said, that Magic Island will be available as a download right after we finished our work. |

Well I've taken an initial look at the beast. =)
As expected, the English is horrific. It could definitely use a cleanup. =P It's screamingly bad and unintelligible in spots. All executeables are stored in Powerpacker 4.0 format with no encryption of any sort. XFD happily decompresses them. Music modules are OctaMED format. The text is NOT just in separate data files, those data files only appear to contain conversation text from inside the main game engine. Other kinds of text for things like inventory, spells, common reactions to in-game objects, etc. are hardcoded in the executeables. The intro and character recruiting segments are each separate executeables from the main game engine. The text in the character recruiting segment is hardcoded into the executeable. Text in the intro segment is all graphical (which will make it a pain to edit, might want to leave that stuff as-is). There is indeed a manual lookup protection in the game. We'll have to figure out what places it gets triggered. A crack shouldn't be very hard to make given a little time in Resource as they don't seem to be doing any hardcore attempts at slowing crackers down (no checksumming of code, etc.) and manual lookup protection tends to be very easy to crack. Incidentally could someone put up the last full version of Resource up in the zone? My Amiga dev tools are all very, very old. =P It was definitely my favorite disassembler back in the day. =) |

Thanks for your afforts, AmigaHope.
I found out that there is no difference between the two English versions. And after playing a while no errors (like gurus or strange behaviour) were found. I hope glwxxx finds a WHDload-Coder. |
