Announcement: Oldskool UK to create Amibench alternative
Following the sad demise of Amibench, us over at OldSkool UK are looking to set up an alternative site for Miggy scene trading.
We are currently sussing out the hosting options and would like some web coders to join the project. Sarek2k, Dazzaboy and myself are up for it and are prepared to support it long term, if anyone else would like to get involved, we will welcome you over at Oldskool UK. The working title we are using so far is either "Amigabay" or "Amibay", so if anyone has ideas about nicking the domain addresses and cybersquatting, please don't, as we will be sorting this out over the next few days. All I ask is that some of the people who supported AmiBench support our new project. We don't intend to conflict with recognised traders on here like Amigakit, all we want to do is provide an alternative to Fleabay for the Amiga scene in the same way AmiBench did, maybe with a few bells and whistles added on as we get it rolling. Thanks Merlin |

Just to back up Merlins posts, the wheels are firmly in motion and we are currently working on a few format ideas.
When we have something concrete to show, we'll update this thread. Cheers! |

OK guys,
www.amibay.co.uk is live in alpha stage at present with a bit of construction and debugging left to do. Why not take the time to pop over there and read the FAQs of what the new site is all about? We should have the site in beta in the next couple of days, it won't be long before we are fully live. Cheers Merlin |

streamline.net (the hosting service) usually has updates scheduled this time of month... so it slows down the access to the database server. i could sort this out but i would need absolute root level access to the server to give the database consult a larger time for timeouts but i don't have that level of access....

@ General
Ultimately Amibay won't just be about Amiga, the site will cover no-cost trading in all retro hardware and software regardless of origin, Spectrum, C64, Atari, MSX, whatever, all will be welcome. Loads of hardware and software is thrown away every year because people can't be arsed to put it on Fleabay and pay seller's fees. This is what we hope to tap into, think of a "car boot sale for the retro scene" and you get the idea. Fleabay and the like just panders to traders and inflates the prices people will pay, we don't want that on our site and traders will have to be approved before they can promote themselves on then site. Our killer brainchild is the Recycle Bin, where people can obtain stuff not wanted any more by others for just the cost of shipping, this is off-limits to traders and will be carefully monitored by the mods. We are all pretty excited about this, please help us spread the word.... Merlin Last edited by Merlin; 26 November 2007 at 10:30. |
