Tri-Formats floppy disk recognition problem.

Hello,

i did some tests from a tri-format floppy disk (PC/ST/Amiga) from a raw stream converted first to SCP then to E-ADF. I tested the result under WinUae and I have some results (the same with SCP or E-Adf ) which I don't understand.

PC part:

Under CrossDos <= 5.07: PC part recognized (only Amiga side, pic 1 ).
Under CrossDos >= 6.0: PC part unreadable
The floppy disk is unreadable under PCX or PC-Task. On the other hand, it is perfectly readable with Transformer (and the file executes correctly, pic 2 ).

ST part:

Medusa (100% software): ST part recognized.
Chamaeleon 1.0 (100% software): ST part recognized and usable ( pic 3 ).
Amtari 3.1: ST part not recognized.
EmuTos: ST part not recognized.

What happens so that this only works in certain cases ?

Thanks.

It could be that Amtari and Emutos have issues with double sided disks, lots and I mean lots of early ST'S only had a single sided drive.

Do Triformat disks work, in an Amiga disk drive, in Amiga->PC/ST emulators with real Amiga hardware?

SCP Dualformat disks work fine in WinUAE (Amiga), Hatari (ST) but I never tried an SCP dual format disk in WinUAE using an ST emulator.

DD floppies generally work well (at least the ones I tested (lots of utilities), at least when reading, running programs is another story).

That's a very good question. I haven't tried (and I can't rebuild the floppy disk because I don't have the right hardware. Someone else provided me with the original Raw and I did the conversions for WinUae. ).

Another user informed me that this worked when he used this type of disk on his machine. I would ask him for additional details.

Why not just convert the raw stream to ipf ?
disk-analyse support rnc_triformat and rnc_dualformat disks.

All the dual/tri-format disks I've converted this way all work on their respective emus like Hatari/Steem SSE/MAME/WinUAE.

Is IPF format supported in any PC emulator?

I tried to convert from RAW to IPF and it just generates a fatal error (pic 1 and pic 2). I put "caps.lib" and "Caps.dll" in the directory and it doesn't change anything.
My SCP works very well under Steem SSE or Hatari.
My problem occurs under WinUae when I insert this same SCP to try to read the PC/ST part. This works on a case-by-case basis depending on the emulators or versions of CrossDos (see 1st post).

Most Amiga software that reads PC/Atari floppies probably assume it is standard PC/Atari disk and get confused when read attempt (randomly?) returns unexpected Amiga data.

Real Atari/PC HD controller would skip Amiga sync words and only start reading when it detects PC/Atari sync words.

GW tools cannot create an IPF. Keir Frasers disk-analyse is able to.
Executables are in this thread: https://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=62217&page=45

Only MAME support loading ipfs (use ct486 driver and a DOS/Win95 setup).

I have done my bit of ranting about the lack of ipf support in DOSBox/PCem etc.

What are you trying to achieve ? I have possibly made an IPF of this demo disk from Generation 4.

Which disk is it ?

He's trying to read the ST part of the triformat disk in an Amiga Emulator (WinUAE) running an ST emulator (and presumably the PC part in an Amiga Emulator running a PC Emulator).

Just for fun.

New Computer Express cover disks are tri-format. Amiga Magazine Rack only has 3 or 4 of them listed.

TILT 107, 108, 110, 115, 116 ipfs in the Zone.

105, 112, 113 can be found in Coverdisks unofficial ipfs TOSEC set.

As usual, WinUAE, Steem SSE and MAME for PC part used to test.
(ct486 + MS-DOS 6.22)

Legends of Valour ST demo on 116 is an STzip archive (in LOV folder).
I guess HD install is needed, Idk.

Btw, what is DP magazine ?
Can't find any info anywhere, or maybe I'm just blind, Idk.

PD. D'oh, I did a "switch-a-roo".

Disk 4 stream has bad tracks (58.0-58.1).
The other 5 can be found in TOSEC along with some of the Generation4 disks.

About TILT 107, it's supposed to have a Lure of the Temptress demo for ST but I can't find any traces of it on the disk.
https://archive.org/details/Tilt107
Doodle Bug demo (Amiga) and Legend of Kyrandia demo (DOS) is all I see.

It's normal. It is specified on page 32 of the magazine that there was no space on the floppy disk provided and that it must be requested by post (the ST part on another floppy disk) .

And thank you for the IPF.
